Decent place to work.
Team Member (Current Employee) - Southwold - 6 June 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedNice enough place to work. Pretty straightforward tasks, good products. Hours are fairly sociable compared to lots of hospitality. Okay but not outstanding pay, very flexible in terms of time off though.
Pros
Easy work, sociable hours.
Cons
Pay could be better, precarious contract, but that's everywhere to be honest.

Good on paper but in reality....
Assistant Manager (Full Time) (Current Employee) - St Ives - 21 July 2023
They say all the right things and from the outside appear to be a good place to work, but in reality not much better than any fast food chain. The people focused values that are preached are lost somewhere between the board room and the stores. If you like being understaffed, overworked and underpaid, then jump in. The work is unfulfilling and repetitive, while the pay is low and the benefits are poor. It gets worse the higher up you get, as the responsibility stacks but the pay does not really increase. They used to be a small, fun company that valued it's staff, but they have grown into a money hungry chain. I don't doubt that the owner believes the values of the company, but the corporate team at head office prevent this from being realised through constant profiteering at any cost. If you want to work in a fast food chain where you are undervalued, McDonalds pay more.
Pros
50% off food, free hot drinks
Cons
Understaffed. Overworked. Repetitive. No overtime pay or lieu time for salaried staff.

Jobs at The Cornish Bakery
Rubbish
Barista (Former Employee) - South West - 16 March 2023
No advancement opportunities, as someone with 5+ years experience I would’ve expected to be put up for a promotion but was not even offered one. The pay is fair at face value but when you factor in having to do the job of 4 people because the ‘budget’ doesn’t allow another staff member on shift then the pay isn’t good enough for the amount of stress. Toxic work place with toxic management.
Pros
a small discount
Cons
too many to list

Cornish Bakery. Redefining what a bakery should be
Team Leader (Current Employee) - Rye, East Sussex - 18 January 2023
Comprehensive training is given at the start of your time with this company, whether you are a head barista or team member. This is because they expect the very best from their teams. They are a very reasonable company to work for in the hospitality business. I started in a new branch so we all had to learn and break in the new technology but was a fun time. All the team are great to work with too. Hours can vary quite a bit, mostly over what you expect, but pay is reasonable and holiday is standard for the industry. The managers listen to what you have to say and try to deal with any issues that might arise They have a good internal promotion policy plus the chance to relocate to other areas. All in all I would say the Cornish Bakery is a good company to work for.
Pros
Discounted food, free drinks
Cons
Long hours in summer.

Bad management

Pros
Day time hours that’s it
Cons
No free lunch, bonus changes, no tips, work extra for free

Good place to work if the team is right
Supervisor/Team Leader (Former Employee) - Street - 23 June 2022
Good place to work as the team in the store came together well and worked hard for each other, the difficulty is the upper management, they never trust you to progress and the pay is terrible, less than £10 an hour for most in store is not enough to live on. The upper management take large saleries and don't spread the wealth down. They think we cannot get better jobs so they can get away with poor pay but I left and now make more than double my annual pay one year later. The people in store make it bearable and are great to be with, but the upper management do not value your contribution nearly enough, they look down on you as unskilled labour they can pay a pittance to.
Pros
Good team and support from colleagues
Cons
Terrible pay, no progression, no appreciation for management

Stressful and low pay
Team Member (Former Employee) - England - 12 May 2022
i worked for the company for almost a year and my pay did not change, as someone who is under 18 the pay is just not acceptable despite me putting in a lot of effort, working overtime when needed, covering shifts on my days off. the company themselves are great but the pay and the work life balance have a detrimental effect on staff

Hard work, long hours little reward (pay)
Manager (Former Employee) - England - 27 March 2022
Loved working for this company and watching it grow. As with any business in the tourist sector, the work life balance suffered despite what they claim, but they were happy to accommodate personal circumstances to a point. Its a great job if you don't have children. Progression slows when you get to certain levels. Overall loved my years here naturally there was ups and downs, its a shame they can't reward loyal people with the higher salary they deserve and they have worked for, rather then offering the higher salary to the replacement, which I thought was very insulting. As for overtime expect to work unpaid. Wishing them all the best for the future.
Pros
Great culture led by a passionate owner
Cons
Long unsocial hours, always short staffed, always expected to just get on with it.

Hard work but rewarding and supportive
Manager (Current Employee) - St Ives, Cornwall - 15 October 2021
A fast paced food retailer, but with an emphasis on quality, local produce, and high end speciality foods. As the business operates in mainly seasonal locations, the working day can vary between a team of 15 working flat out 8 hours shifts, to a team of 5/6having to stay motivated and engaged during the quiet times. As the business has grown, more effort and energy has been placed into staff welfare, and this is becoming the new driving force of the company.
Pros
benefits package is very, very good for hospitality
Cons
seasonal trade can be intense

Great work/life balance
Store Manager (Former Employee) - Torquay - 22 April 2021
I worked here for around 3 years as store manager. My experience over all has been a good one- I was lucky enough to have an amazing area manager who pushed and encouraged my personal growth. Company itself is growing and so more policies and procedures being put in place because of this, as expected. Overall fun but competitive culture between other stores and areas- great place to work but as management you would need to be 100% in it, not just for the salary but the experience too. Company did really look after all workers throughout covid in terms of safety and furlough.
Pros
50% off
Cons
Long summer hours

A great place to work
Holding Manager (Current Employee) - Newquay, Cornwall - 19 April 2021
I love working in the Newquay bakery, its only a small team but definitely a good team to work with, the company definitely thrive on there values, it can be fast-paced and challenging at times but thats what brings the fun to work. The benefits the company offer are amazing i.e paid birthday off, good rates of pay ive never known any other business to offer so many benefits plus in store incentives, full training is provided plus chances of developing in your roles which is a bonus for people like myself who have developed and still developing daily with the support of management above, The Cornish Bakery definitely go above and beyond to make us the world's best.
Pros
Free Coffee at work, staff discounts, Valued, always recognised
