Great place to learn new skills

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Timpson has a brilliant culture and is still quite a small family run business but covid hasn't been kind and its changed the work environment quite drastically

Pros

Bonus scheme, lots of skills and courses, loads of room for progression

Cons

Long hours, lonely and basic pay.

Not as good as they think

Pay is really low for the amount of responsibilities given but the justification is the couple of pounds you get in bonus... The company itself is not too bad but does need a union since they like to take some liberties, like taking wages off you for breaks, yet having a break is frowned apon, so 5 hours a week you work for free, area teams don't care about staff and do bare minimum whilst claiming they are doing you a favour, if you phone in sick, they ask you to come in anyway, if you tell them no they will ring you daily asking when you will be back, you are expected to do over time without being asked and at times it seems like your life should evolve around the company, they also try to force a curtain mentality/culture onto you and if you don't fit or adapt to that culture they will just simply get rid of you,To work for this company you need to lose part of your moral compass since almost every service they provide us disgustingly overpriced and some services are just a straight up scams, training is non-existent anymore since there is no incentive to train someone, it's just more responsibility and another wage on the bill meaning even less bonus, The cardinal sin of this company is how much the CEO likes to tell everyone how great the company is, self praise is not praise at all....

Pros

Mostly work on your own, bonus, get your birthday off

Cons

Long hours, no breaks, no training, forced culture, low wages

Friendly workplace

Timpson is a friendly workplace where the employees are valued. Hours are long, pay good compared to similar jobs. Work life balance is valued, however holidays can be cancelled if someone is off sick, as there aren't enough staff to take account of this.

Pros

Good work life balance In house competitions Bonus Free holiday homes

Cons

Long hours Not many staff

Kind workers and good morals.

Staff are really nice and friendly, and will always be happy to help you out. Management are also pretty decent, and the job gives good useful skills that come in handy more than you think.

Pros

Teaches good skills

Cons

Pay could be better

Upsetting company to work for

Not too bad of a company to work for if you're already fully trained but other than that if you're planning on starting work with them you better be prepared for a long wait until anyone can come train you. From my years of working there, trainees are not even trained to a minimum standard and trainers don't have time to come train them. They get left for months to just keep shops open and trainees get fed up of waiting for their training and then leave and the cycle starts over again. Its a shame to be honest as it was once a nice company to work for but has gone very down hill but if you can stick around and wait for them to make their rounds it can be a decent job in the long run

Pros

Bonus scheme, secure job

Cons

Salary, stressful, lack of training

Good Management & colleagues. Poor pay let's it down

Good Management, left to run shop with minimal interference. Good discounts. Working lunches & poor pay.

Pros

Good Management & discounts

Cons

Poor pay

Unfair wages for a lot of work.

If you like working for minimum wage and having to pass around 14 skills including shoes watches keys and having no help it's the job for you. It's an awful place to work and as soon as I get a new job I'm gone.

Pros

Bonus

Cons

Work every weekend

My manager and area manager were great

I enjoyed the job but was dealt with Badly when it came to the COVID 19 situation and how to get rid of there staff at minimal cost to the company. The hours were long.

Pros

It’s a job

Cons

Hours

Too much stress, NO support

You are forced to run busy shops alone after only 3-4 weeks training and then if you don’t handle it well you get sacked. There is no work life balance as you are asked to work out of your hours with no pay and always asked to do Saturday overtime for free also. Was forced into a management role with no training at all and then told by management I would never succeed.

Pros

Company benefits

Cons

Managers

Stressful with poor management

The area team are let down severely by one of their ADM's. It's no good asking for help as they make you feel like you're useless for asking. It's all profit driven and people ignored. They reckon they've got top down management when it's more like a dictatorship. It's my way or the highway and if your face doesn't fit, you're not gonna do well.

Pros

Free uniform

Cons

Long hours, lots of travel, no real job progression, frowned upon if you take a lunch break, lone working

Over worked, under payed, lonely

Keep it short and to the point, company now trying to make money of the workers they are under paying, by offering them in house loans with an interest rate of 17% APR.You are expected to work with spinning blades, grinding bands, knives and other heavy machinery on your own, at all times, with no back up if something goes wrong. They expect you to work through your lunches but don't want you eating in the shop.Stock takes come round you're expected to do it alone while the shop is open, count every key and every individual repair and engraving material. All your stock all while servingUn reasonable expectations for national living wage amd when you ask for a pay rise they say they can't afford it even though you get a letter through your door every year telling you how many millions of profit they we make for them. They promise bonus instead but you don't get any because they have so many shops open in the same area you never make enough to get bonus. It goes on

Pros

You learn to do useful things for yourself and wprk with the machines to do it

Cons

No weekends, minimum wage for everything you need to know, cleaning, maintaining the shop amd managing, company tells you how many millions profit they make each year

Fast paced and plenty of problem solving

I enjoyed my time at the company. They work with an upside down management idea where you have free rein to impress your customers and not have to seek constant approval from head office to do so. Can be fast paced and requires regular problem solving which will keep you on your toes.

Pros

Bonuses to top up wages

Cons

Can’t take weekends off, holidays are hard to organise

Working for Timpsons is like Working for your family

They look after their workers, always helping them to get the work done. They have days off on their birthday and special days. It's a good job they take care of their workers

Pros

Holiday homes

Cons

None

Paying less and less but expecting above and beyond

My honest opinion is don’t fall for the fake benefits and them saying they are a good company to work for. Ever since the owners son has taken over it’s all about money , you will be on minimum wage and expected to perform miracles with no gratification or feel of accomplishment

Pros

Free keys, that’s it

Cons

Everything

Amazing place to work

I worked for timpson for 2 years and it was an amazing g company to work for the management were very friendly and helpful if you ever had a problem they went above and beyond to help resolve the issue they don't just help with work problems but if you have issues in your personal life they will do anything they can to help they treat all there employees like family and thats rare with big company's once your in you have a job for life the interview was a phone call to start with by the area manager then a trial day with one of the adms where they will assess your personality to see if you will be a good fit for the company they don't judge on your skill level as they will teach you everything you need to know my best advice would be to ask as many questions as possible and be yourself wear shoes trousers and a shirt for the trial day the wage aint the best but there is always over time if you want it and you do earn bonus every week if you hit target most shops are very easy to hit target in you get a list as long as your arm of benifits and they are a very family oriented company if you have a child you get the kids first day of school off to be with them as well as your birthday off every year they have holiday homes you can apply for as well as many more

Pros

Loads of benifits, bonus, treated like family, great management

Cons

Not the greatest base wage for what your doing

Fun workplace, great culture

I've been part of the family for 6 years and I have to say I really love the job. No day's the same and at first, there can be a lot to take in and can be quite stressful if you're not self-driving your training but with a lot of hard work and a fun personality, this job can be perfect for you. A day solo would include; opening up the shops, doing cash checks, helping customers on the machines, taking passport photos, completing passport applications, portraits, making photo gifts such as canvases, personalized mugs, coasters, slates, cleaning, creating displays, and using photoshop to edit customers pictures or to make a display. If you have a fun and quirky personality this job's for you! I love being able to chat with all walks of life, having a giggle when someone's printing pictures from a hen or stag do but also being a shoulder to cry on when life's become a little overbearing for someone who's having to print photographs for a funeral. There are so many benefits, many of which I've not used yet such as the free holiday homes. We have a brilliant bonus scheme which I would say is competitive (but in a good way!) as it creates some friendly banter between shops when we smash those big targets. We're encouraged to run shops as if they were our own which is brilliant. We have FULL power to amaze people and I really admire that about the company. Management are great, I get on well with all of my area team and I'm not afraid to drop them a call when I need to. Our area is so big being South Wales and the West Midlands I sometimes feel that what may work on one side of -

Pros

New skills to learn, great bonus incentives, great benefits, incentives to stop smoking, incentives to pass your driving test, free holiday homes to use, (mobile role) meet loads of new people from all walks of life, a chance to progress within the company, area competitions to win prizes, great discounts

Cons

Long hours with no lunch break, mobiles expected to travel unreasonable distances with no incentives, mileage allowance is much lower than the average

Plenty of variety with a family culture

It is great to have the freedom to make your own decisions in your branch. The training is all on site which is good and there is always somebody on the end of the phone if you need anything. Customer service is the most important part of the job. The culture is very friendly and there are lots of benefits.

Pros

Lots of recognition when you do well along with lots of benefits

Amazing company to work for.

I have experience of working for other companies where I have often felt like a number. This is not saying I am comparing working environments, but I am cared about and valued within Timpsons. I have appreciative conversations. One word-THANKYOU-is used often! I am part of this Timpsons family and cultured, and never once felt ostracised. No questions is too small or silly. Everyone is there to help and assist. I have a wonderful working relationships with colleagues and those above, although there is no hierarchy. I have worked my way through colleague, branch manager, branch colleague and now mobile manager rather quickly, and have always been shown that my development is key. I feel valued for this. There are many benefits for working for Timpsons...having your birthday off paid, bonuses for the branch turnovers you bring in, and celebrations for kindness within the company.I have found that colleagues want to work and eager to do well. This is because of this wonderful culture and family.

Pros

Paid birthday days off. Added bonuses. Holiday homes for colleagues. ‘Upside down management’

Family run business. Professional and caring!

Made to feel welcome from the start. Fantastic culture to support any individual. I was in a dead end job with no future, 6 years later I would never look back. Timpson give you the opportunity to run your own branch your way and the freedom to trial ideas. Area teams are fantastic and deal with matters very professional. There is always room to climb the ladder in your job role with benefits to help aswell.

Pros

Great friendship and leadership

Cons

None
