Hard work understaffed and under payed

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
So when I first started work I thought this would be a nice easy job. The pay wasn’t good but I didn’t mind because I thought the work would be easy. But it’s not. It’s simple but the sheer quantity of food you make means that the quality really drops. As well as this the management are very weak and the kitchen is not clean at all. Also, some of the staff are very lazy and it meant that me as a person who had been there a month was havjng to tell people that had been there for years to hurry up because everyone always slacked on the clean down. Not a fun working environment at all.

Pros

Honestly can’t think of one

Cons

Under paid, over worked, dirty kitchen, faulty equipment, lazy staff and management, front of house always getting involved in making the food, the list could go on.

Fast paced

The environment is not very nice. Guests can be rude and bar drinkers are horrid. Management didn’t tend to stand up for staff, and pay was bad as waitresses didn’t share tips so kitchen and bar staff didn’t get any. Not many benefits to the job.

Pros

Free food and shifts go quickly

Cons

Bad pay, unsociable hours and unfair treatment

Wouldn’t recommend

If you’re looking for a quick and easy job then by all means apply. If you’re looking for something more long term and would like to further progress your career then I wouldn’t recommend. Employees work 12 hour shifts and one employee I spoke to had to cover another member of staff causing him to work 12 hour shifts 10 days in a row, my first week I had worked 7 days in a row without even seeing a contract.

Pros

33% discount at all other company chains

Cons

Long hours and unfair work weeks

Great Opportunity For Career Progression

I have worked for this company for over 20 years and progressed through the ranks. It is a fast paced environment, but if you have the right attitude and desire to build a career then Toby Carvery can offer a great opportunity.

No work life balance, everyone backstabs

Worked as a chef for several years, you get no respect and management have favorites and don't give breaks even if it's an 11 hour shift, by the way 30m gets taken off your shift for the " break", career advancement is non existant and the way things are prepped is questionableAlways new staff because people realise how bad it is and leave.

Horrible place to work

Management are horrid. Will be little you and make you feel rubbish about yourself. Pay is rubbish and you don’t always get paid right either. The work is easy if you are allowed enough staff to be able to cope with how busy it gets. You find yourself doing 3 peoples jobs at once because you are not allowed enough staff to enable you to cope. All they care about is getting money in the till and not the welfare of their staff. Through COVID they have constantly broken rules on social distancing and face coverings just get as many people in and spending as they can

Pros

None

Cons

Long days. Horrible management. Not safe

Easy to step up no work life balance

I started at Toby when I was 18 as a Christmas temp. After 8 years I was still there and assistant manager. There are loads of opportunities throughout the company to step up and become a team leader of you wish to. As assistant manager you get bonuses if all the business targets are met and as floor/bar staff you will get tips. It a very fast paced company to work for so need to be able to keep up and willing to work long unsociable hours and miss out on big holidays such as Christmas. However Christmas Day at Toby is the easiest and least stressful day of the year. Cons there isn’t isn’t much of a work life balance due to the unsociableHours and working all holidays and can sometimes be stressful when busy. If you become salaried you are expected to work 48 hours a week and if you work over this you don’t get paid any extra most weeks you’ll end up working at some point for free. So if you worked out what you actually worked with what you got paid you probably get the same as the floor staff

Pros

Easy to step up if you wish and good people to work with

Cons

Long unsociable hours, underpaid and work for free if salaried when over your hours

I learnt a lot, but not a good work life balance

My time at Toby was stressful. I learnt a lot and it made me a stronger person, but the work life balance was awful. Managers did what they could with the little they had to work with. I met some great, hardworking people. People that didn’t deserve the mess they had to deal with on a daily basis.

Pros

Lunch/dinner provided

Cons

14 hour shifts

Aggressive and unreasonable management

Worked here as a shift supervisor for a while until I started to be scapegoated for every little issue around the restauranttruth is even the bosses haven't a clue what they're doing, had colleagues trying to sabotage me which successfully ruined my prospects of working at any other mitchell's and butlers outlet in the future however I now know that was the best part.

Cons

Existential dread

Worst place to work ever

The job was great at first and all of the kitchen members got on amazing. But the pay is rubbish and the hours are ridiculous. No free time during the week or weekend. Had to stay back late without being paid for it and we would lose out on holidays and payments because of the lazy manager. I would not recommend anyone to work in that kitchen.

Pros

Free food

Cons

Long hours, stuck up boss, low pay for a lot of hours

Fast paced, stressful

This was a very fast paced environment to work in, in which I was left on my own for most of it. Even when I asked for help on my station, it wasnt given to me and I was just told to refer to the book thing you get given online or to figure it out myself I have slow processing disorder so it takes a while for me to understand things properly, which management failed to recognise and failed to support me appropriately. Also I gave more than enough notice about a compulsory college trip I had to go on (if I didnt go on this trip I would have failed the course) and the manager got really funny with me about it. Furthermore I never received a payslip on time and I had to keep chasing up the manager about it to which his answers were "I'm busy come back later" every single time I asked about it even at times where it wasnt very busy.

Cons

Very long hours, short breaks if you were given one at all (kitchen shifts)

Good company

Not the best pay, however it is fully made up for in benefits, including 33% off meals at any Mitchell and Butlers location, stocks in the company and other things exclusively to M&B. Managers are friendly and down to earth, however tend to stick up for higher positioned coworkers.

Pros

Free lunch, friendly teams

Cons

Pay, hours

Terrible management

Toby Carvery is full of terrible managers who are only interested in making themselves look good to their area manager. Staff are overworked and under appreciated. Very stressful place to work at a front of house team member. Speaking as someone who has worked there for a number of years, customer service is very low down the priority list... takings, takings and takings are the top 3 priorities. Avoid working here unless you are someone who likes to be spoken to like a child and expected to drop your life plans as soon as a shift needs covering.

Pros

Tips can be good providing management run the restaurant properly

Cons

Terrible managers, toxic working environment, staff under appreciated, no job security or minimum hours per week
