Great place to work that's helps you to socialize and engage with different people

I have only positive things to say about toby carvery in Poole the management are on point and work with the team to get results energetic environment that feeds a satisfaction that you are part of a family or a culture within the business I feel valued and even though the work can be fast paced you learn how to manage this and then it becomes a sort of pleasent stress

Pros

Feel part of a team social based fun environment

Cons

Shifts (but fair)

Great Opportunity For Career Progression

I have worked for this company for over 20 years and progressed through the ranks. It is a fast paced environment, but if you have the right attitude and desire to build a career then Toby Carvery can offer a great opportunity.

Pros

Career progression, training, staff discount, share schemes

No work life balance, everyone backstabs

Worked as a chef for several years, you get no respect and management have favorites and don't give breaks even if it's an 11 hour shift, by the way 30m gets taken off your shift for the " break", career advancement is non existant and the way things are prepped is questionableAlways new staff because people realise how bad it is and leave.

Cons

Easy to step up no work life balance

I started at Toby when I was 18 as a Christmas temp. After 8 years I was still there and assistant manager. There are loads of opportunities throughout the company to step up and become a team leader of you wish to. As assistant manager you get bonuses if all the business targets are met and as floor/bar staff you will get tips. It a very fast paced company to work for so need to be able to keep up and willing to work long unsociable hours and miss out on big holidays such as Christmas. However Christmas Day at Toby is the easiest and least stressful day of the year. Cons there isn’t isn’t much of a work life balance due to the unsociableHours and working all holidays and can sometimes be stressful when busy. If you become salaried you are expected to work 48 hours a week and if you work over this you don’t get paid any extra most weeks you’ll end up working at some point for free. So if you worked out what you actually worked with what you got paid you probably get the same as the floor staff

Pros

Easy to step up if you wish and good people to work with

Cons

Long unsociable hours, underpaid and work for free if salaried when over your hours

I learnt a lot, but not a good work life balance

My time at Toby was stressful. I learnt a lot and it made me a stronger person, but the work life balance was awful. Managers did what they could with the little they had to work with. I met some great, hardworking people. People that didn’t deserve the mess they had to deal with on a daily basis.

Pros

Lunch/dinner provided

Cons

14 hour shifts

Aggressive and unreasonable management

Worked here as a shift supervisor for a while until I started to be scapegoated for every little issue around the restauranttruth is even the bosses haven't a clue what they're doing, had colleagues trying to sabotage me which successfully ruined my prospects of working at any other mitchell's and butlers outlet in the future however I now know that was the best part.

Cons

Existential dread

Worst place to work ever

The job was great at first and all of the kitchen members got on amazing. But the pay is rubbish and the hours are ridiculous. No free time during the week or weekend. Had to stay back late without being paid for it and we would lose out on holidays and payments because of the lazy manager. I would not recommend anyone to work in that kitchen.

Pros

Free food

Cons

Long hours, stuck up boss, low pay for a lot of hours

Fast paced, stressful

This was a very fast paced environment to work in, in which I was left on my own for most of it. Even when I asked for help on my station, it wasnt given to me and I was just told to refer to the book thing you get given online or to figure it out myself I have slow processing disorder so it takes a while for me to understand things properly, which management failed to recognise and failed to support me appropriately. Also I gave more than enough notice about a compulsory college trip I had to go on (if I didnt go on this trip I would have failed the course) and the manager got really funny with me about it. Furthermore I never received a payslip on time and I had to keep chasing up the manager about it to which his answers were "I'm busy come back later" every single time I asked about it even at times where it wasnt very busy.

Cons

Very long hours, short breaks if you were given one at all (kitchen shifts)

Good company

Not the best pay, however it is fully made up for in benefits, including 33% off meals at any Mitchell and Butlers location, stocks in the company and other things exclusively to M&B. Managers are friendly and down to earth, however tend to stick up for higher positioned coworkers.

Pros

Free lunch, friendly teams

Cons

Pay, hours

Terrible management

Toby Carvery is full of terrible managers who are only interested in making themselves look good to their area manager. Staff are overworked and under appreciated. Very stressful place to work at a front of house team member. Speaking as someone who has worked there for a number of years, customer service is very low down the priority list... takings, takings and takings are the top 3 priorities. Avoid working here unless you are someone who likes to be spoken to like a child and expected to drop your life plans as soon as a shift needs covering.

Pros

Tips can be good providing management run the restaurant properly

Cons

Terrible managers, toxic working environment, staff under appreciated, no job security or minimum hours per week

hard work but good fun if you get along with colleagues

this was my second job having worked as a waitress beforehandi enjoyed my time here, i got along with most people if not everyonei worked here through college - management will work you around your school hours and are very understanding of thiswhen i left, management offered to keep me on the system so i could transfer to other companies or come back for christmas, etc - which is good!the main problem is the lack of breaks especially on long and hard shifts, where you'd do a 9 hour shift with 20min break (if lucky) and then be expected to do another 8/9 hour the next day with the same break or less. naturally, with long days you will become tired and when tired you will find it hard to maintain the friendly and welcoming personality that is expected of you - so just bear in mind if applying for this position, you will be tired. i was only front of house, i know kitchen staff were doing over 12 hours with no breaks - only 5 mins if they were smokers. the lack of breaks leads to a breakdown in teamwork because people would go for 15 min toilet breaks because they didn't care anymore, slowing down the service cycle which is difficult.however, for a first job/ temporary job it is good. i would not recommend this as a main source of income but it is good alongside uni or college

Pros

swap shifts, develop skills, good for cv, good for young people/ first job

Cons

long hours, hard work, no breaks, pay isn't fantastic, management

Poor General Management

I enjoyed working here as it’s a great place to make friends and build confidence with customers but the general manager enjoys shouting at staff in front of customers.

Pros

Wages, Friends, working with customers

Cons

Long hours, stressful, poor General management

Never work here.

Toby carvery is terrible, they bully, minipulate and belittle you. The management will shout and swear at you and nothing will be done about it when you report it. The staff are two faced, talk about you behind your back. (This includes managers) and there are clicks all over. If you don't fit in they will make sure you know about it. Extremely unfair with the hours and pay!!!

Pros

Nothing.

Cons

Everything.
