Assistant Director - EURASIA in London
Intense but Rewarding
As Assistant Director for promoting defence and security sales to the EURASIA region (Europe and part of Asia), I am responsible for 21 priority markets and managing and developing a team of five staff (country managers).
The demands of the job are intense and the day starts at 07:00 hrs and finishes at 18:00 hrs (sometime much later if a significant event is running in one of my markets). The type of work that I do varies on a daily basis, it can cover arranging for international delegations to visit the UK to meet UK companies at significant defence events, such as the Farnborough International Trade Show. Or it could involve updating Ministers on latest developments, concerning a campaign that we are pursuing with UK industry, either face to face or via a written briefing.
No day is the same and I am often meeting with industry, or holding teleconferences with the British Embassy Teams overseas, to develop a campaign strategy, to ensure that the UK companies are best placed to win significant defence and security campaigns.
The most enjoyable part of the job is working closely with UK companies and UK military advisers to develop campaign strategies. I also enjoy meeting the overseas buyers (usually the defence procurement Departments/Ministers) to act as the HMG interface between the overseas buyer and the UK supplier.
CUSTOMER CARE INTERNATIONAL TRADE EXECUTIVE in Hatfield, Hertfordshire
Very good environment. Respect employees
Its a good place to work. You can learn a lot. They respect your individual needs as an employee and try to be flexible.
People are nice and willing to work together.
Even when there is pressure at work this is not one of those places that you feel obliged to stay and work longer hours than your contract.
Trade and Investment Advisor in London, Greater London
Lots of potential
The department is in a constant state of flux and it makes it hard to feel settled in your role. This limits productivity and makes you feel insecure. Senior management is out of touch with the demands of the private sector, with whom we are meant to work with directly. I do not feel that they recognise my pre civil service work experience and I am routinely under utilised.
