Work here if you want to help towards something bigger; so many important pieces of legislation etc. They have done a lot and keep working to improved the work environment and culture. Still some way to go and different areas will feel different. Unfortunately Civil Service restrictions will impact your pay and reward levels.

Stressful just for Admin Roles

New procedures have been introduced and the New Management style is pushy, demanding and some would call it bullying.Any feedback to middle management is slapped down and you are left struggling and juggling many tasks. It used to be a good place to work and enjoyable, but not now.Not very well paid either, lower than most other government departments.

Interesting work

Salary is not enough and the work can be stressful. Due to the amount. It is also very interesting and you can get involved in high profile matters which is a plus

Pros

Cons

Long hours not enough pay

Great work-life balance

Great place to work. Work-life balance is generally very good (except in some pockets of the organisation). Varied career as it's possible to work in almost any area of law or policy!Salary is quite low and well below market average. Other benefits are good though, with high employer pension contributions, enhanced maternity, flexible working, good holiday package, cycle to work scheme etc. Progression opportunities are quite slow, particularly given the salary is so low so promotion is the only real means of payrise. The organisation generally has a good culture and objectives. The politics can be challenging though, particularly working for some demanding ministers who don't know what they're doing!

Bad employer

If you wondered were all the freaks and weirdos went from your University then look no further than Government Legal Department. It is the only place where any of this lot could find employment. Truly awful lawyers and management with no training provided. You also have to be to the left of Corbyn to make any progress, you would have thought they would be impartial but they drone on the whole time about left wing issues. A truly poisonous atmosphere to work in, keep away from this lot if you have any ambition or ability they certainly have neither.

Good Experience

A good place to work in relation to well-being and work/home ratio. Good opportunities for relocating to different parts of the organization. Opportunity to train further and very good mentoring. However the pay scale seems less than what is benchmarked.

Pros

Good Well-being, culture and home life/work ratio

Cons

Poor Pay

This job was through Brookstreet Agency

Worked with an excellent team. There is room for professional development and a strong support network. I was encouraged to try new skills and was given continuous training and support for my personal development.

GLD is fun but not consistent across its divisions and staff when it comes to flexible working

The ability is not opened to everyone including those who are in junior managers. especialy within the commercial department and the pay is not great for the work that you do onn day to day basis.

Bullying Culture

Extremely disappointed bullying is allowed - when complaints are made they are not followed through or investigated in any way. The programme manager is biding his time waiting for his retirement which he is counting down. Absolutely no idea how to run a department. Very laid back there; morale is low due to the inexperience of management. They should be trying to hold onto their staff who are in general very hard working.

Enjoyable place to work

Further development of my skills. Understanding clients requests and dealing with their caseloads as quickly as possible. Learnt various process on how to process confidential information.

GLD really sucks and is for losers

Do you really want to work for an organisation where the client Depts rarely properly instruct you on why they terminated someone's job or are in a position to tell you whether the person got a dismissal appeal, let alone be able to tell you if they have the relevant appeal paperwork. If so then the mad cap world of the GLD might be what you are looking to avoid.

Public services?

Overall nice place to work. I would recommend Typical public service culture, despite training in unconscious bias. Long contracts , Some contractors working past 15+ years
