World leading university with best resources

The University of Cambridge is a collegiate public research university in Cambridge, England. Founded in 1209 and granted a Royal Charter by King Henry III in 1231, Cambridge is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world's fourth-oldest surviving university. The university grew out of an association of scholars who left the University of Oxford after a dispute with the townspeople. The two 'ancient universities' share many common features and are often referred to jointly as 'Oxbridge'. The history and influence of the University of Cambridge have made it one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Pros

A big amount of resources, nice people, nice staff, a lot of smart and hard working students

Cons

Quite low salaries but high living cost

Demanding job, but good employers

Wonderful to work for, very supportive, working for the University is a good career, good pensions & benefits for long -term employee's, good salaries and annual leave and sick pay, job itself could be emotionally demanding at times as dealing with patients in pain daily, but support was there when required for both patients and staff.

Dysfunctional and short sighted

Everyone is annoyed at someone. Morale is low. Progression is near impossible unless you are already at the top. Permanent contracts and fair pay offered from the top down. A lot of bureaucracy and pie-in-the-sky ideas about how we can work together with no follow through.

Overall Good working environment

Good working environment, as always will depend on the department hat you work in. But there is good training and a good social environment around the location.

excellent

it was really great opportunity for me to work in the University of Cambridge, and i learned many skills from teaching there; such as dealing with students in different nationalities and how to be a part in a team.

Professional Lab Environment

Temporary worker only. Only assigned one experiment at a time. Professional work environment. Work required intense bursts of focus and concentration. Large amounts of time spent waiting for reactions.

in the 1990s it was an exceptional place to work, i am uncertain if this remains true currently. Lovely city, can talk to work. Good colleagues, good funding.

Pros

Cons

Visiting Researcher

University of Cambridge is a beautiful campus. Though you must be willing to walk a long distance or get a bike to trek back and forth. There is not much parking near the buildings.

Flexible, productive and fun place to work

My present job involves dealing with students, teachers and academics. The most enjoyable part is the flexibility and the people. I have been doing this job for 16 years, met a diverse group of people, learned more French and Italian and website sofware etc.

Pros

Flexible hours

Cons

great working environment with extremely complex governance structure

Loved working for the university. Great people to work with, but typical academia, the governance structures are rather extremely complex. 31 autonomous Colleges, 6 schools and numerous Faculties and Departments. They all seem to act independently.

Pros

dealing with clever people always challenging, huge opportunities for continuous development

Cons

stepped in tradition, complex governance
