Good work environment provided by employer
Teaching Assistant (Former Employee) - Dundee, Dundee City - 22 October 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedI worked with a wonderful lecturer who was not rude or mean and understood when my classes clashed with my job. I found the job interesting because it forced me to relearn things and even gain new knowledge and experience from having to teach the students.

Interesting and varied work
Administrator (Current Employee) - Dundee, Dundee City - 17 August 2023
Great colleagues but senior management out of touch. Varied work but not a lot of opportunities for promotion if you work in administration compared to academics

Not what I expected
Events Assistant (Current Employee) - Dundee, Dundee City - 7 August 2023
Not what I expected. Could do with more interaction and more modern office. Working with no windows or daylight is not great. They don’t have flexible working hours.

Good
PhD student (Current Employee) - Dundee, Dundee City - 10 July 2023
Good place. Nice location. Great amenities. Interesting and diverse range of people. Atmosphere is welcoming. Helpful staff. IT department may occasionally let you down so dependence should be cautionary.

Toxic workplace
Postdoctoral Research Assistant (Former Employee) - Dundee - 27 June 2023
I joined during the pandemic and was never introduced to the team for 6 months. Within the team, there was constant fighting. The manager made inappropriate comments about the PhD student. There was no feedback given or clear direction. The atmosphere was very toxic. The training was sorely lacking and there was clear favouritism about the allocation of reagents and resources. No opportunities to meet other postdocs.
Pros
Fair pay
Cons
No sense of community

Employee Culture differs between departments
Administrator (Former Employee) - Dundee - 25 February 2023
There is a notable difference in workplace culture between the schools and internal departments. In my experiences, the more remote areas have the best sense of community, like DJCAD and Ninewells Campus. The latter in particular had so many lovely people in all levels working there, and were often more supportive and understanding of mental health issues than those working within the main university campus.
Pros
Nice People, Laid back environment
Cons
Difficult to Progress

Was good to begin with
Technician (Former Employee) - Dundee, Dundee City - 12 September 2022
Started out a good place to work years ago, however change of management and attitudes towards lower paid members of staff has made it an absolute nightmare in recent years. Local school management carry out poorly organised organisational changes whenever they want. These are constantly looming over your head, and then dragged out for years so you are constantly stressed about whether or not you will be kept on, or made redundant. Plus they are happy to tear up your contract and downgrade your pay whenever they see it suits them. University management also think nothing of lower paid workers and their long-term futures, destroying pension schemes and removing any other benefits. If you do decide to work at the University of Dundee... Good luck... and join a campus union ASAP, you will need it!
Pros
Great interactions with students
Cons
Disgusting management culture

Very enjoyable Summer Job with the Cleaning Helpline, allowed me to build confidence as it was my first job. Well run department which was more than happy to help when issues arose.

Fun, fast-paced, yet relaxed place to work
Customer Service Advisor/Receptionist (Former Employee) - Dundee - 12 November 2019
I spent just under a year working within the UoDIT department and it was a really good environment to work in. The team were mostly really good fun to be around and work with, which helped make the demands placed upon the department easier to deal with.

Getting harder to enjoy my work decided to take early retirement due to amount of work expected and standard of fitters coming through the system
Chargehand mechanical engineer (Former Employee) - Dundee - 17 October 2018
Organise work before hand for the four fitters. This involved planned maintenance & reactive repair work. Dealing with work lines where any university employee or student phones in with complaints such as lack of heat in room. Ensue manager is kept up to date with any problems during the working day. Dealing with any requests from manager and projects regards future work. Ensure manager & project team are made aware of plant condition and time for replacement. Compile all risk assessments and method statements required for work to be carried out. Prepare & arrange for insurance inspector to inspect all equipment under pressure regulations. Order all spares required for reactive and planned maintenance work.
This is only a short description of the daily work.
Pros
Steady working hours
Cons
Lack of good engineers coming through the modern training system

kind of good
Student (Former Employee) - Dundee, Scotland - 12 June 2018
My overall experience was stressful though I had gone through with a good time as my colleagues were helping still sometimes it was very hard to balance work and studies since it was a part-time job and I was a fulltime student.

Serious work environment
Part-time laboratory supervisor (Former Employee) - Dundee - 24 May 2018
The learning opportunists provided by the University of Dundee has been outstanding. Working in a small group limits work space social interaction which at times can be difficult. However the University does provide a large number of sports and social groups which more than makes up for this.
Pros
Access to learning
Cons
Small work groups

Productive and fun workplace
Carnegie Student (Former Employee) - Dundee City - 14 May 2018
I gained a huge amount of laboratory experience from this placement and it gave me an insight into research. Most of the project was based on trial and error therefore I faced challenges everyday. To get to the end and have been successful was extremely rewarding. Colleagues were extremely helpful and friendly and so was my Supervisor.
Pros
learned a lot
Cons
There weren't any

great staff poor management
Laboratory Technician (Current Employee) - Dundee City - 11 April 2018
The team can be great. The management is a bit messed up. The university Is your employer but you line manager is first port of call who tend to think they own the university and you. They are dictated by their line managers so despite your employers (uni of dundee) rules your line manager makes it up as they go along. It also is favuoratism. This is seen in many departments.
Great in the sense of security of a job but management structure seems to be up to eat individual and they make it up as they go along. :/
Pros
secure pay, sick pay, good holiday pay
Cons
management, flexibility restriction with some departments
