Great place to work

Indeed featured review

I full enjoyed my time at Hull University. Great team to work with and a great working environment. Felt really motivated to work every day and good pay.

Too many managers, not enough staff

Roles are not replaced after staff leave. The staff are just numbers and are not well thought of. The money is okay but the hierarchy of staff is an upside down pyramid, too many managers and not enough staff. Very few career progression opportunities and too many meetings that are not relevant to staff who attend them.

N/a

Can be stressful during assessment periods but usually calm. Learned collaboration within a team. The most enjoyable part of the job was the fact that I could work from home.

Pros

Flexible working environment, supportive team

Cons

Long hours sometimes

A Great Uni

I loved my time as a student here. Highly recommend this to anyone considering where to apply for higher education; the lecturers are understanding and mostly down-to-earth and genuinely care about their students and accommodate needs.

Good overall

An overall good place to work. Most of the staff members are lovely and some of the management teams are very supportive. I worked at the university for a long time as it was an enjoyable place to work.

Pros

Pay, flexibility, annual leave

Cons

Some members of management

Great place to work

Lovely, friendly and supportive staff. Right training for individual roads. You would love the cultural mix if you like meeting new people from different backgrounds.

Interesting and relaxing

Loved working here and one of my best experience. The pay was good and a very good team. Its a very nice environment for International students to work at but might be hard to get a job but once you did, it will be a very good experience

student ambassador

It was really nice to work and study. All the students ambassadors were very nice and I could meet people from different departments so it wasn't boring

Avoid at all costs

Spent thousands of pounds to relocate to this university, Hull has its reputation but I felt really positive starting this job as noted the city won City of Culture in 2017. I was severely let down at this job with very poor pay, unsympathetic and non-responsive management, overwhelming workload, and even faced discrimination by my line manager. Team members are supportive and extremely hard working, I only feel sorry that they will have to struggle with things as it is. If you are thinking about joining this university, PLEASE AVOID until at least 2027 when hopefully things are different.

Pros

Fabulous team members

Cons

Everything else

Good depending on course

Some courses are good some aren’t as good! I enjoyed my time there, got the grades I wanted and the help I needed when it came to my assignments, especially my dissertation.

Poor Place to Work

Worked here for over 10 years and found this place an abysmal place to work - management is incompetent and self-serving, career advancement is near impossible and nepotistic, recruiting more and more poor calibre students with less and less resources for student support, workplace culture is toxic with some colleagues engaging in toxic work behaviours (e.g., malicious gossiping, forming self-serving cliques).

Pros

None

Cons

Impossible work conditions

Good experience

Working at the University of Hull is very lovely. The staffs were kind and they guide me through every series of tasks that I've managed to pull it off. It's shame that I only work for three months, as I'm looking forward to where I can return to the University of Hull.

Too much politics less work

Universities should be fun and exciting, creative and skillful. Here not so much. Many departments dont like each other and whether you get involved in their problem or not they drag you in as well. In my opinion all scientists should work together and not against each other.

A stressful environment, corruption breeds throughout the business.

Worked there for many years without a sniff of promotion. Applied for other jobs at a higher grade withing the company but fell at the first hurdle because the jobs had been already allocated to friends or family of management. A very corrupt organisation.

Pros

Pension, weekend enhanced pay.

Cons

No work life balance. You need to become very friendly with management or related to progress.

Great campus. Excellent facilities. Good immediate work colleagues. Great Faculty to work for.

Worked at Hull University for ten years. Great people and team to work with. Generally people are supportive and collaborative, although there can be some competition between faculties and areas. Over time, the numerous restructures (4 in 5 years) took its toll and I decided to leave to have better job security. It's hard always being asked to do MORE with less resources. This can be stressful, especially when expectations are still high.

Pros

Nice Costa cafe on site, Great work colleagues within my immediate area, Lovely buildings and facilities, On site parking.

Cons

Top level management aren't always good to deal with, Work environment can be stressful, Always feel you need to do more with less resources, Lack of support for flexible/ working from home

A job for life

Got to work in many different areas of the university giving me lots of different experience ( I was a cleaner)Steady job, with achievable targets. Sadly thats all it was, overtime was well paid but almost impossible to come by. After 5 years it got very repetitive and seeing different areas was refreshing.

Pros

Excellent pension and work environment.

Cons

No advancement, not many hours.

Great workplace

In my role as a Sales & Events Co-ordinator, I had extensive experience in all aspects of events management including: • Responding to initial event enquiries from clients • Meeting with clients to discuss their requirements and expectations from their event • Liaising with internal university departments and external suppliers • Acting as a point of contact at events and managing the proceedings • Requesting and managing feedback to ensure that future events were also successful.

Fast Paced but Interesting

Worked there for a work placement. We had to do several activities which involved organising and collecting books from around the library as well as several other tasks around the building. To see a system like that operate was very interesting and gave me an appreciation for the level of work that goes into a library.

Rewarding and fulfilling in challenging times

I was a university academic for over twenty years. Things changed a lot in that time. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching students however the demands of the job outwith that became incredibly stressful. My subject is vulnerable nationally and for that reason we were under pressure to recruit students and change our programmes to meet this challenge. In addition, the institution came under increasing financial pressure leading to active divestment at that point I could see the writing on the wall and took a voluntary severance increasing
