Standard post doc

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
I feel that the job is pretty standard for a post doc. Work quite long hours without too much appreciation. Department I am in is really cutting back spending when they have significant improvements that they need to invest in.

Bsc comp sci

Studied a bachelors in computer science. Content is decent, with a lot of support from lecturers. Jubilee campus is nice, overall had a great 3 years here.

Full of motivated people

I believe Nottingham is actually a decent place to go to if you want to succeed in finance. Lot's of motivated people if you join NEFS society. So, I actually recommend Nottigham Uni.

What people like
  • Clear sense of purpose
  • Feeling of personal appreciation
  • Time and location flexibility

Flexible but sometimes unorganised

Depending on who you are working for, my case alongside pHD student, can be flexible but also makes it unorganised with uncertain hours. Therefore no regular pay. But useful for just a bit of extra money.

Buyer Beware

There is a drive to make every moment as difficult as possible for staff. Broken Software, Removal of key software licences, removal of services, R&T staff have been told their time is costed at £0 an hour. They also seem to pay less that other unis

Pros

Nice city

Great opportunities for internships

The university is great in giving you many opportunities for internships or placements, depending on your course. Even with the pandemic disrupting my studies, I was able to secure a couple of internships in the lab due to the services, emails, and newsletters I signed up for.

Easy going work place

Easy going, great work/life balance. Good pay and good holiday allowance. Supportive management and lovely colleagues. It’s nice to be at a job that you don’t stress about once you get home.

Political and mentally draining.

The university prides itself on inclusion of staff members with disabilities but management are not equipped to support you with their lack of knowledge and patience. You’re expected to work long hours where there is no work to life balance. You will have to make sacrifices in your personal life (your hobbies won’t exist anymore) and you’re not rewarded for the hard work you put in. Everything is about who is the most “popular” and everyone is extremely political. Management aren’t supportive and are barely around so staff take it upon themselves to take charge which causes conflict amongst them. If you are brave enough to speak out about the problems, you will get punished for it to the point where it would be classed as victimisation. They will try and push you out of the job by being passive aggressive, harsh, verbally abusive, which knocks your confidence in your ability to do your job. Even students have passed on messages about how they will not return to the department for work experience due to management. It’s extremely sad hearing that the universities own students who are paying for a positive environment to learn are having the same issues. This isn’t a reflection on the whole university as I have met other members of staff from different departments who are amazing and extremely supportive. Unfortunately, the department I work in isn’t one of them.

Pros

Get paid for over time.

Cons

Working double the hours stated on your contract, lack of support, political.

Poor organisation

Its mostly good, but poor organisation leads to lots of things slipping through the cracks, affecting all areas of the organisation. Makes it quite a pain

Well organised

I really enjoyed working at UoN. Very well-organised, good pay. The staff in the department was always very nice and helpful. The most enjoyable part was the actual research.
