Supportive Environment

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
I work within research at the uni and have found the area very supportive, there are lots of career opportunities and engagement options. The management may be a little harder to navigate but on the day to day I enjoy my work

Good for a job but not a career

The university is a good employer to work for if you want to (at least in my area) work with nice colleagues and meet interesting people. Management mostly leave you alone to get on with the job, so a lot of self task allocation. The career progression however is almost non existent. If you want to advance you have to apply internally for other roles. If you're just starting out in the world of work and want some learning opportunities (on subjects/ equipment etc) or just want a job to have money coming in go for it.

Pros

Mostly relaxed work pace, nice/interesting academics/staff & learning opportunities

Cons

Low pay for area, poor career progression & understaffed IT/Estates departments

Great workplace

Relaxed and friendly culture, everyone is warm and welcoming. Salary is alright, kitchen might need a revamp. Management is great as they’re always supportive. Loved working there!

Terrible place to work

Support centre work is terrible, low pay compared to high volume of work on daily basis not including adhoc duties that may arise. All issues I've reported to my managers during my nearly 2 years in the role of Programme Administrator have gone absolutely nowhere and Upper Management seems purposefully kept out of the loop. Academic staff are rude with combative attitudes toward Support colleagues, overall a completely demoralising place to work for with no chance of progression or incentive to stay.

Average

The university is okay to work for providing you have a good line manager. There is a general feeling that the left hand doesn't talk to the right hand sometimes; however, if you can get through that most of the people you work with make it worth the effort. Great people, average management/leadership, good work environment.

Lots of walking between building on a HUGE campus

Jan to April 2018 I taught Management Accounting to 42 postgraduate Chinese learners at the University of Reading. Good management and support services for lecturers.

Onderzoeksgerichte universiteit

Great campus and relaxed atmosphere.

Higher management don't recognise IT and support functions. Money is spent on student expectations only. Very limited progression opportunities. Lovely campus. Flexible hours.

DLHE Caller

This was a good part time job for a student and the management was laid back and understanding and worked with you in order to help achieve goals. I wish I could still work for them.

Challenging, always progressing, fun atmosphere

Typically the job of a supervisor includes the efficient running of your bar, leading a team in order to accurately set up and effectively close down the venue including proper cleaning and maintenance of stock. It is also imperative we can correctly cash up our tills and bank all bars of the venue ready for the finance department. The management is incredibly approachable and helpful, they go above and beyond to make sure the environment is enjoyable whilst at the same time efficient and productive through the day and night. The hardest part of the job would be dealing with the fast paced environment on a busy night shift while helping new staff and creating an enjoyable atmosphere, maintaining stock and ensuring the tills have enough change. What I enjoy the most is the challenge of staying on top of all tasks and training new staff to a high level.

Pros

Great atmosphere and colleagues.

Cons

Long over night hours.

Summary

Great campus. Good management and support offered. Would recommend to anyone interested. Little negatives to provide based on experiences gained and work/life balance

University, great lecturers who are insightful and caring, poor management

Each day would include reading multiple papers, summarising them in short concise paragraphs to be shared with the rest of the group, working with PhD students and Postdoc's and experimenting with novel methods for data analysis. 3 meetings a week with groups of academics in both formal and informal environments. The Bluesky nature of the research was liberating and resulted in conclusions that shaped the rest of my degree and way i approach signal processing problems.

Pros

Dedicated research environment with great resources, interdisciplinary work

Cons

Poor macroscopic University management

Management need training in how to manage people!

It used to be a great place to work (I've been there 10 years). However management turn a blind eye to bullying and don't want to know when it's brought up. They will always have excuses for the Senior member of staff's behaviour and will turn it round to the complainer who is usually more junior and will become the fall guy. I was told to put up with it and then told it's my fault. There is a major blame culture going on. It's a shame because it could be (and was) a good place to work but not anymore.

Pros

Lovely campus

Worst management I've experienced in over 24 years of employment

Awful management and decision making. Culture of bullying which is accepted (swept under carpet) by management. Extremely unstable at moment due to cuts.

Pros

Beautiful campus, lots of perks such as free training, lunchtime concerts, bike maintenance, discounts etc.

Cons

Extremely poor management, culture of bullying which is accepted by management, spent millions on PwC consultancy whilst making hundreds of staff redundant

Excellent place to work

I have undertaken research at the University of Reading for the past few months, where I have investigated epilepsy. My responsibilities included measurement of activity from epileptic animal tissue, extraction of animal tissue for experimentation, creating animal models of epilepsy and animal behaviour tests. The management and co-workers were very friendly and helpful.

Pros

Great supervisors and learnt wide range of skills

Cons

None
