good place and people
Good place (Current Employee) - Reading, Berkshire - 26 June 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by Indeedbeen working there for 2 months and everyone has been good. the salary was almost the same market rate for an IT admin. pension is exceptionally good @ 22%. However, buildings and work building is poor with a lack of facilities and also need of decoration. The role seemed slightly pigeon-holed hope this changes soon.

Insights into University of Reading
What people like
- Inclusive work environment
- Time and location flexibility
- Support from manager
Challenging, always progressing, fun atmosphere
Bar Supervisor (Former Employee) - Reading, Berkshire - 5 June 2017
Typically the job of a supervisor includes the efficient running of your bar, leading a team in order to accurately set up and effectively close down the venue including proper cleaning and maintenance of stock. It is also imperative we can correctly cash up our tills and bank all bars of the venue ready for the finance department.
The management is incredibly approachable and helpful, they go above and beyond to make sure the environment is enjoyable whilst at the same time efficient and productive through the day and night. The hardest part of the job would be dealing with the fast paced environment on a busy night shift while helping new staff and creating an enjoyable atmosphere, maintaining stock and ensuring the tills have enough change. What I enjoy the most is the challenge of staying on top of all tasks and training new staff to a high level.
Pros
Great atmosphere and colleagues.
Cons
Long over night hours.

Interesting and fulfilling work
Disability Support Worker (Current Employee) - Reading, Berkshire - 30 May 2017
great to build relationships with students and help them to achieve their full potential. As I am employed on a 'zero hours' contract it is difficult to guarantee security.

Productive and welcoming enviornment
UROP Assistant (Current Employee) - Reading, Berkshire - 25 May 2017
This job offers me the opportunity to work within numerous different disciplines, from marketing to admin work with the support of several fellow office workers. My superior is particularly friendly and supportive and allows opportunities for me to work autonomously as well as adhering to given tasks. I always feel as if my work is contributing to the scheme and that I am a valued member of the team.

Interesting and Fun
Lab Technician (Current Employee) - Reading, Berkshire - 19 May 2017
Here I helped process materials as a lab assistant. This is a different sector to what I usually am use to and I had the best researchers and professors in the department working with me. The hardest part of the job was leaving at the end of the day!
Pros
Great atmosphere, SCR pass
Cons
Temporary Contracts only

Welcoming and Supportive
Volunteer Archaeologist (Former Employee) - Silchester, Hampshire - 17 May 2017
The Team at Reading University supported my throughout the two weeks work experience. They were happy to teach me the skills required to complete each task, as such I was quick to pick them up and made great progress while I was there. As it was volunteering I didn't earn any money, but the university provided accommodation so I was able to save money on transport and focus on the work at hand each day.
Pros
Free Lunch and Accomodations

Student Note Taker (Current Employee) - Reading, UK - 5 April 2017
I work as a student note taker. The salary is excellent, and the flexibility around my studies is very good (e.g. if a date was close to my dissertation submission date, my shifts were covered no questions asked).

University, great lecturers who are insightful and caring, poor management
Research Assistant (Former Employee) - Reading, Berkshire - 27 March 2017
Each day would include reading multiple papers, summarising them in short concise paragraphs to be shared with the rest of the group, working with PhD students and Postdoc's and experimenting with novel methods for data analysis. 3 meetings a week with groups of academics in both formal and informal environments. The Bluesky nature of the research was liberating and resulted in conclusions that shaped the rest of my degree and way i approach signal processing problems.
Pros
Dedicated research environment with great resources, interdisciplinary work
Cons
Poor macroscopic University management

A great place to work
Senior Library Assistant (Former Employee) - Berkshire - 20 December 2016
Every day was different, working on the Information desk was interesting helping students and staff from many different cultures. Providing support for online e-resources, helping out with self-service machines and registering library members. The academic library was used by around 2,000 people each day so it was very busy. Providing staff cover for all the service areas was the start of my day, opening up on time, looking after staff rotas. Organising the workload for a team of library assistants for the day dealing with any problems from the evening staff. Supervision of a team of library assistants (around 10), & part-time student shelvers.
My colleagues were very nice people, very helpful and good team players. It was my responsibility to retrieve overdue library stock, look after fines, bills and student University library debt. The most challenging part of the day was staff shortages as all front line services had to be manned. I really enjoyed training new library staff.
Pros
Beautiful campus, lovely grounds.

Post-Doctoral Research Assistant (Former Employee) - Reading - 17 September 2016
With the efficient cooperation between me and the other researcher, we have contributed to the fundamental understanding of these novel hybrid materials, including how their self-assembly impacts on both their optical and redox properties, and also created a novel technology platform for optoelectronics, centred on more sustainable metal sources (low toxicity and reasonably priced Mo) than current technologies (. precious metals or toxic Pb or Cd based Materials).
