Difficult on holidays but enjoyable

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Working here was refreshing as there was a positive vibe around each of the staff, the people you worked with seemed happy and supportive which was great, the thing that let this hotel down was how they pushed for certain "undesirables" we'll call them to fill up parties and rooms which lead to fights, broken property and staff being assaulted, which didn't result in the guests being banned but welcomed back and repeating their previous behaviours, myself and multiple other staff members we're directly assaulted or lunged at by these people. Apart from these "undesirables" the company is friendly, supportive and has a good energy about it, pay is good and are paid for overtime as well as training being provided and everyone providing good team work.

Pros

Good team energy and good work/life balance

Cons

Extremely busy holidays and some difficult guests

Could be a great place, brought down by a terrible work environment.

Oh boy, hospitality is tough at the best of times. But Village Hotels are meatgrinders, I have never worked in such an unappreciative work environment in my life. You will clock in and be defecated on by the public and management alike until you clock out where due to the current always working nature of hospitality you will recieve constant messages and updates from the group chat apps they use. You may be hired for the gym or reception or sales or meetings or food and beverage, but make no mistake you are hotel employee number xxxxxx and you will probably end up working shifts in all departments, the only exception is housekeeping who you may work with but who never end up working in other departments than themselves. There is an app that is being pushed for all aspects of the hotel which doesn't work properly and the guests of the hotel assume it's all your fault and you will be screamed at for it. The main management of the hotel is fairly useless and will tirade and pick on staff at all available moments. Middle management and department managers are hit and miss but only truelly care about themselves but will try and accommodate you where possible most of the time if it is in their interest long term. You seem to get less and less benefits and advantages as time goes on with the company, and do not bother trying to advance within the company unless you are in a clique because as stated before you are employee XXXXX and why promote a number. Wage rates are poor for anybody but upper management and department managers, department managers are usually average wages for hotels. -

Pros

Stressful and tiring

Not a good place to work at if you want a social life. Treated unfairly as regards to shifts, no proper breaks, expected to work late at certain times.

Pros

Some discounts, free gym membership

Cons

Long hours, stressful, unfairness, favouritism

Literally ZERO HOUR job

I was technically employed for 11 months and wasn't contacted personally even once about potential hours. I quit in the end because it felt like I was unemployed.

Awful!!

DO NOT WORK HERE!! Terrible pay, no regard for others personal lives, make under 18s work past midnight and extremely long shifts, but it was fun as they really do not care about behaviour and you can just go off and do what you want

Pros

Fun as I did no work and flirted with other members of staff alot

Cons

I once did a 16 hour shift but most shifts were between 11-13

Worst management

Over worked and underpaid! Rarely giving any advancement in position or pay, but giving many more jobs and roles to do! Not worth the money. Minimum wage for maximum effort while most managers weren’t doing their job properly

Pros

Free food for kitchen staff

Cons

Sometimes not given any break

It’s okay underpaid minimum wage!

When I applied for the job I was given weekends which was fine. But I never seemed to get a holiday on the weekends. Whenever I asked for holiday on the weekend they said no, you are a weekender. Which I understand but if I work weekends I should receive my holidays then. Which I never I just got given holiday pay randomly. However the department I worked for was lovely, the only thing I’d didn’t like was not been given the pay when I wanted it.

Pros

Some staff are nice, discounts on Starbucks and the restaurant. Free gym membership, which can be used on the swimming pool and exercise classes.

Cons

Refused holidays all year round. Minimal wage, understaffed

Great place to work but rubbish wage

Lovely place to work, no loyalties to staff that have worked there over 2+ years compared to new starters though. Managers are brilliant and friendly, however shifts are very irregular

Unrewarding

A fabulous product - design great could do with more TLC. I have worked for the company for a number of years but due to Covid-19 my job has now been made redundant.

Very stressful

Very stressful job and without any training before I start. I didn't receive any help from my line manager for the problems I had because of the lack of training.

Nature of the workplace

Blackpool - supposedly fun, fun, fun! Not here. Management is the most appalling role model. Total lack of respect for his team - bullying culture. Staff having to take on duty manager role with no training, many never getting break (illegal) never mind anything to eat. Manager leaving at 5 when needed but expecting others to stay over their time then threatened if they claim overtime. A day is typically clocking on rapt the correct time followed by no break and doing overtime due to a lack of staff. learned a lot here. Basically how bad management can remove the prestige of a place. Manager stands out as someone who is not a team player. The workplace is run by over worked and stressed people who are paid very little and treated very badly for the great effort they put in by management and clients. The hardest part of this job is turning up for it. Enjoyment - leaving and removing the dreadfully cheap uniform

Pros

Non as they have all been removed

Cons

No back up from management

Excellent colleagues

Management not up to scratch . There is a lot of back stabbing, which is a shame because some amazing people work there . As someone who has worked in the hospitality industry for a number of years, I was delighted to secure a position in the Village Hotel but soon became disappointed with the culture there

Productive and fun workplace

Did not work with the company for too long, however it had great benefits like food and soft drinks on shift. Had a good relation with the managers, however, had to change workplace because of commutting.
