Our Purpose is to inspire people to live an active life. It drives everything we do and we are obsessed with achieving this.

But how did we get here?

Matthew Bucknall, our Founder and Group CEO, started Virgin Active in 1997 when Sir Richard Branson asked him to research across the globe and create the best health clubs in the world. Matthew opened Virgin Active’s first club in Preston in 1999. A combination of new builds, club acquisitions and strategic club disposals has helped create the Virgin Active of today; a business with over 240 clubs and more than 1.2 million members across eight countries.

So, how do we succeed as a business in inspiring people to live an active life? It’s simple really… through our amazing people. This is why we think it is really important to make, and keep, a big promise to them:

"We are one team and want our people to always feel they can be themselves. We work hard and we dream big."

Fun depending on which gym
Loved it at the start and everyone was lovely, but theres a complete lack of communication within management and foh staff. When people bring it up to management it is always dismissed. Pay is shocking too

Bog Standard
High turnover of staff due to low compensation and lack of training. Personal training is compensated on a tier basis, reflecting sessions delivered.

Fun place
Lovely place to work and relaxing very helpful Varied roles for progression The only downfall was when new managers came in and changed things which made things very difficult

Great culture. Chances to advance.
Work culture is great. Make great friends and meet members who can become friends also. Work stress depends on the manager but over a 7 year period most of the managers I had were very fair. Great place to start working and work your way up through different positions. Free gym membership is also a great bonus.

Eh.
An okay company to work for. Definitely like to be difficult when it comes to certain things like cover, overtime, holiday or bank holidays. Sometimes expected too much off of their staff and didn’t delegate jobs to staff members fairly so some had larger workloads.
