Productive experience
I worked at west Thames college for over 7 years. It was one of the most rewarding jobs that I did! I learnt a lot working at the college and gained even more experience and now I work as a teacher.

Student Support Assistant in Inclusion Department

disorganised and toxic culture
Low paid overloaded workload, pay not commensurate with qualifications, management especially in the Inclusion department extremely toxic, one or two individuals made the working day awful for everyone, one gone one remains evidently. The most enjoyable part of the job was making a difference to the students who were a great cohort. Hardest part of the job was coping with an overloaded day while being treated like an expendable servant by a temporary manager, and teachers that didn't like their bad teaching practice being exposed. There is no recourse to HR if you are supplied by an agency to the college. No progression, no recognition, no sick pay. Dreadfully toxic culture. Avoid working there, very low pay and no respect for you as a person. Career progression = zero.

Everyday was different
The supported learning dept. was very challenging but rewarding. New challenges enabled staff to reflect on past experiences to be able to pacify anxious students. A very well led department with staff who went the extra mile to support the students. All staff were friendly and inviting; willing to share expertise and knowledge. Working at WTC has displayed a culture of care and cohesion in educating and safeguarding our vulnerable students. This role enabled staff to listen to student concerns, that were addressed. Entering the building every morning to be greeted with positivity from students and staff was by far the best part of the day.

Not a bad place to start off a career
So I had a great start at west Thames college, but there are to many work colleagues that think they are the boss of you but also there are some really nice staff there who will go that extra mile to help you, pay is ok for a starting point in a starting career, time keeping is important, being open minded is important especially working in learning support for calming students down, overall is an ok place of work.
