Started off.as a dream job like most pla es few decent blokes some up there own backside been there 25 yrs plus know it all so when asked for help advice they hadn't done this job before. Like alot of the reviews on Whale if you face doesn't fit your a gonna. The Whale way may of existed years ago firm but fair approach. As for average time served 11 yrs that was back in the day I know that service have replaced a good 70% of staff. Managers gossip a cosmetic support to employee's face tra ked no man management skills. Things happen for a reason. In four yrs of service never really settled just the money kept me there.
Money, bonuses, hrs
Not got time to train you.
When you get offered the job they promise you the world, loads of benefits, pay reviews every 3 months but once you give up your perfectly good job to go there it all changes! No pay reviews no bonuses no nothing! And then they use covid to force everyone(apart from the people who are forcing it) onto rotating shifts with no care about your circumstances or family life. The only way you can get away with not doing shifts is if your a director/manager or have no legs and only 1 arm and require kidney dialysis every night but even then they would probably tell you to bring the machine in and do it during your lunch break. To summarise, basically they dont care
I will have to come back to you on that one.
I have worked at whale for around 4 months now. I was greeted with a warm welcome and have since made some great friends with my colleagues. Everyone has been supportive and very helpful. Im glad I took the leap and changed employers to whale! I have recently had to endure some hardships within my personal life and I have been given great, heartfelt, continuous support form the management staff!
Great atmosphere and 'family felt' environment
Parking can get a little crowded
At fist what seems to be a decent place to work soon becomes the complete opposite. Equipment that is used to fabricate parts wouldn't be out of place in the black country museum. Everything you have ever leared about engineering including degrees might as well be left at the door because its all about the "whale way" whatever that is. You'll never know as alot of the staff could never get another job in engineering of fabrication and are extremely reluctant to help in this fabled way of working. And to the age old.if your face dont fit or you have a different opinion on how to do things you are immediately singled out and picked on by team leaders. Who again are just put in that position from being yes men or the managements mate. If you can put up with all this for the money its ok. Just dont expect progression or job satisfaction
Bonus. Pay. holiday
No progression. Low morale.
There is a constant lack of parts leading to you standing around looking for work the majority of the time. Recently used the coronavirus pandemic as a way to introduce a shift system they have been pushing to impose for years. Higher management don’t acknowledge you as a person and you feel more of a number than a person unless you brown nose. They say they are a family company but don’t follow up with these claims intact they directly oppose them with some of their decisions. Stressful work and not paid fairly for working shifts with no shift allowance and unsociable hours.
Decent people on the shop floor
Management don’t care about you at all
Older workers don't share info.ok only if face fits and brown nose.no opportunity to defend wrongfull dismissal because I made an Injury claim they just wanted rid no matter what I had to say.Very I'm all right Jack attitude money good but management and gaffers out for themselves.
Money bonuses hours
Treatment by older workers and staff

I came to whale with no experience and was taken on as a trainee, they said we will show you the “whale way” of doing things. They did nothing but destroy my self-confidence and made me not want to go near a spanner again. You are made feel stupid and if your face doesn’t fit you won’t progress any further. It’s not what you know it’s who you know. I’m glad it never worked out!!
You are made to feel that the work place is amazing, and that everyone is very supportive and willing. However it is filled with older age workers that know ‘everything’. They successfully make you feel unwanted and stupid especially if your are under 50 years of age as the older workers believe that you are there to replace them in the future. They will put you to learn with a college who no colleges like or enjoy working with, he will bully you, and when you complain about him, you are made to feel like an idiot because he goes on holiday with the boss and he will be believed and you ignored. Amazing and interesting job, how ever people massively let it down, I am glad it didn’t work out.
Whale is renowned for its extraordinary retention in staff. The average length of service being approximately 11 years. It is a fantastic place to work. The benefits are amazing and you can become share holders in the company too. The whole workforce are like a family. A company that really cares about its staff. It was an absolute pleasure to work there.
Worked here for 8 years learnt new skills and work ethic sometimes felt like a prison limited interaction with other employees felt like was watched constantly. But if you got work completed on time to high standards was generally left alone. Work was set out so could be completed without thinking, some people enjoy that
Benefits, hours, H&s
service and repair vaccuum tankers. working outside most of the time in all weathers learnt about vacuum and jetting systems confined space trained seeing a vehicle working properly again after beening fixed
every other friday off
very good hr type perks. bouns etc... very poor general environment, most staff quote "that's the whale way", i.e. people think their way is the only way. very reluctant to teach these methods, very secretive over current/potential work. my position also had a very low work load, this made it hard to fill time.
