Non existent management, staff bullying
Second Chef (Former Employee) - Stanhope arms - 25 January 2023
Not a very nice company to work for I was treated poorly. Management hardly ever on shift just leaving the place to be run by people who wasn't being paid to manage the place and didn't care because it wasn't there responsibility. Completely awful atmosphere very clicky group of staff. Just a dreadful experience all round.

Great place to work once you know regulars
FOH (Current Employee) - Oxfordshire - 24 January 2023
It is a good place to work hourly rate is low but once you get to know regulars it makes up for it in tips but the hours are pretty random and always change so if you want set hours you should make sure to request this before getting the job.

Poor management and working conditions
Chef (Current Employee) - Rochester, Kent - 20 January 2023
Expected to work ridiculous hours, no recognition; only negative feedback, no leadership or proper training from higher management. Orders not being done and having to work without adequate equipment. Repairs rejected to save money.

Don’t do it
Waitress (Former Employee) - England - 19 January 2023
Don’t do it. Management will cut hours and expect you to perform miracles and get the work done in the same time with less people. Some of the staff you’ll meet will be lovely and others will make you not want to be there. Management have no idea how to manage and bully you. If you make friends you are split up from them on shift and if you make a complaint it will be ignored. Always expected to stay on because they are always short staffed and it’s not a fun or relaxing environment to be. They expect you to be robots and miserable until you leave. They always cut hours more than the 5% they are allowed to!
Pros
None
Cons
Long hours, unfriendly, expect miracles, don’t always get breaks.

Company has lost its values
Step Up Team Leader (Current Employee) - UK - 10 January 2023
Whitbread used to be a great company to work for, but have lost their way over the last few years (long before covid). Poor quality food that they are forced to sell at discounted prices just to keep the lights turned on. Far too much focus on discounting. More than happy to cut hours, but treat you like you’ve just killed their hamster if you refuse to pick up extra on a day off (or a day that’s been cut). Try their best to create headlines by offering higher rates of pay to all team to help with cost of living, and then cut hours a couple of days later. No consideration for mental health. Guests are rude as anything, and often seen in fits of panic if they can’t find a discount code. It’s embarrassing to work for a company that values discounting over actual quality that people actually want to visit. As a step up team Leader, expect to be in the role for every minute of your shift, but only get paid for it when the General Manager, Restaurant Manager or the Full Time Team Leader is not on site. Avoid at all costs.

Fantastic career stability
Chef (Current Employee) - Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear - 6 January 2023
Great company to work for with room for extra training and progression plus benefits and discounts. Clocking in cards, online training and a very organised company to work for.

Jobs at Whitbread PLC
Head Office employee - Overall satisfied with the company
Purchasing Support Manager (Current Employee) - Dunstable, Bedfordshire - 3 January 2023
My line manager is great and supportive, but the opportunities are limited, with a fair bit of change in the time I have worked here. Plenty of opportunity to Collaborate with other functions within this role. The hardest part of the role is sometimes feeling like the outsiders of the department and our role is undervalued by the wider team.
Pros
10% Bonus
Cons
Unsure of progression routes

This is Hospitality
Deputy Manager (Former Employee) - Birmingham, West Midlands - 3 January 2023
Can't really compare with any other hospitality related workplaces but everyone knows that there is not much of work life balance in the industry. The company evolves and makes changes fast and you will need to adjust quick or be left behind. The expectations of you are high and sometimes it may feel like you are not getting the pay back for your hard work. It is tough, it is hospitality is what it is. The company does support you and give the training & opportunities but only if you're willing and put the graft in.
Pros
training, progression, networking
Cons
work life balance, low paid job

Not good
Housekeeping (Former Employee) - All sites - 17 December 2022
Not flexible when it comes to people with kids needing set shifts/days hence why they struggle to recruit and keep staff as people end up working every weekend when management work mon-fri, poor management and treated unfairly and very low wage for the work your expected to carry out
Pros
Keeps you fit
Cons
Poor wage, poor management

No work life balance.
Restaurant Manager (Former Employee) - Weymouth, Dorset - 7 December 2022
Must devote your life to the business to be able to have any success. No work life balance. Company claim they care but you’re just a number. Have no decency and never back their managers. Pay is the only plus if you fight hard for it and even then it’s not worth the devotion required.

Zero work life balance with zero support
Restaurant Manager (Former Employee) - Dundee - 30 November 2022
If you want to work 14+ days straight with no day off, always on call, being micro managed, lack of support from upper management team, no work life balance, no tools to do the job, difficult to recruit then this is the ideal job for you.
Pros
£2 lunches
Cons
Long and exhausting hours

Horrible management, horrible environment.
Bartender (Former Employee) - Salfords uk - 26 November 2022
Horrible work environment. Selfish management who only care for themselves. Couldn’t care less about the staff. If you have any thoughts of leaving you’re met with “you know where the door is.” Make you feel completely worthless.
