I have been waiting to work for all my live in 38 years of service in the Hospitality Industry

Whitbread has, and always will be the Hospitality Business I have been waiting to work for all my live in 38 years of service in the Hospitality Industry. Their culture of putting the guest and their teams at the heart of everything they do is obsessive and passionately carried out. Their training is amazing and in my opinion they are a world class Hospitality organisation. It has been a long time (35 years) since I have ever worked for such a professional, innovate, fair employer. I only have one concern. Even if your have Degrees, Post-Grads, experience and want to progress. Unfortunately the Management structure seem to hire their friends, cronies or family before a hard worker with the relevant experience. However, apart from this HR disaster, they are probably one of the best companies I have ever worked for In 38 years of Hospitality.

Pros

Fairness, kind, paid on time, support staff, good work life balance, nice guests, some lovely big bosses, clean, friendly, my General manager is Lovely.

Cons

Cronyism, no progression.

Ok place to work/poor wages

Worked for this company for nearly 8 years but when I recently left no one cared apart from my actual housekeeping team. The management are the issue!

Pros

Great housekeeping team

Cons

Lazy management/don’t care about their staff

Easy job

Work is not demanding, is easy to do.Being a hospitality job, all days are paid equal apart from Christmas and New Years times. You can’t plane your life. Rotas are made just 1 week before.

Pros

Good money for what you do

Cons

Can’t plane your life.

Ok salary

When applying for the role it didn’t state whether it was permanent or temporary. It wasn’t until the training we were advised who was going to be permanent or temporary. Only two of us were temporary and my god there is no leeway.Straight after training you were given a grace period of about 1 week, after that you’re expected to respond to 30 complaints minimum in your shift. You also had to have a high accuracy score. Although my accuracy was consistently perfect I was constantly pushed to complete more complaints.I was dismissed due to taking took in time off whilst experiencing a family loss and was advised by my manager I need to decide if I wanted to leave for the day or risk being in trouble. There was no mental support at all. So if you’re ever going through a hard time I WOULD not expect the management to have any remorse whatsoever I had someone steal something out my personal locker which understandably wasn’t locked so was my fault but no investigation was taken place.

Pros

Pay was ok

Cons

Long hours, management

Everyone is a number

You’re only listened to when you’re the GM and when you battle to become one, you are offered little or no support. My eight years service of hard work and dedication was a total waste of my time and career.

What can i say?

I mean, working here you can tell instantly that there is a favouritism system, the more liked you are, the more hours you get. Depending on the day you could have happy customers, but at soon as one dish is out late its nasty to work there and suddenly everything is your fault. Maybe this is just my resturant but after this i dont wanna work in hospitality again. At least you get to keep the tips.

Pros

Sometimes a friendly environment, good tips.. you dont have to share tips.

Cons

Sparatic shifts

Mind boggling stupidity

They promise you fair and reasonable pay but give you grief practically every day and night not always from the public ,don't support your side, and don't understand why you have an opinion, you work for us attitude ,not a good company to work for ,lots of opportunities to go nowhere in the job unless you really suck up to them and be there friend when it suits them , management blow hot and cold every day and night , don't understand why you exist

Pros

Free breakfast, free uniform (dressed in black)

Cons

Long hours, No Respect for you, No smokers

Trustworthy company to work for

I personally had a really good experience working for Whitbread. It was professional, no typical uncomfortable office environment. I worked with a genuinely lovely team and management did not micro manage. Management we’re supportive and definitely looked after me whilst I worked here. I have left whitbread with nothing but god things to say about the company.

Pros

Established company, trustworthy and reliable

Cons

Don’t get paid for overtime unfortunately. For example, If you’re on a call when your shift has ended you only get paid upto your shift time!

Great for part time

Great for students who wanna do part time. There are some days the restaurant closes early and that’s when they send you home early because obviously there are no guests. They don’t pay you if you leave early.

Pros

Flexible work times

Cons

No fixed hours

Terrible micro management

The manager I am unfortunate enough to still work for Is a terrible example of a micro manager, she also seems to take enjoyment from public ally degrading staff through aggressive language and swearing regularly, to the point it has even been mentioned on trip advisor reviews Luckily she is supposed to be leaving to go to another site soon

Pros

Decent wage for the work.

Cons

Micromanagement. Poor HR.
