Tiring and stressful
Overworked and underpaid from a chef point of view. Tips aren't shared either! If they aren't cutting your hours they're cutting others and leaving you short staffed all the time

Housekeeping (Current Employee) - Portishead - 13 June 2022
Over worked and well underpaid Sometimes don’t get day off in 17 days or more . Some days we get given 12 or more rooms to clean in little time … the wages are so low compared to other places and for how hard we have to work also

Busy service and high hygiene standards.
Grill Chef (Current Employee) - Norwich, Norfolk - 30 May 2022
A great company to work for as long as you make sure you lay down your set hours when you first join the company. Expect to be asked to do more. There are never enough staff.
Pros
Reasonable pay, flexibility, friendly team.
Cons
Long hours without warning, no KPs, no fresh produce etc.

Ok-depending on the site management
Front of House, Team Member (Former Employee) - Bridgwater - 10 May 2022
Good place for a start -learn a lot in the beginning, fast paced, can be stressful sometimes but that's hospitality! The management depends on each site, good or bad! I was lucky to have very good ones at King Sedgemoor Inn. The pay....honestly, the whole hospitality isn't paid well unless you're management but if opportunity occurs you can advance if you're willing and can work long hours, many times on short notice and split shifts, weekends and bank holidays. Again, that's hospitality - not for everyone! Would I recommend it? - yes if you want a career in hospitality. If you're a part timer only it's good, too. If you need school hours or 9-5 and weekends forget about it!
Pros
Good depending on site management
Cons
Not for family people

Grill Chef (Current Employee) - Canterbury - 8 May 2022
Great company to work for and getting better year after year I left in 2016 and I am back there now started last year 2021. I enjoy the work you have to push for progression but you get there in the end. Team work is amazing at whitbread
Pros
Team is like a family

Avoid
TEAM MEMBER (Former Employee) - Queensferry - 3 May 2022
Loved all my team member colleagues. But the manager was horrible. No care for his staff and spoke down to them. Never fulfilled contractual obligations.

Always short staffed and underpaid
Head Chef (Former Employee) - Chandlers Ford - 19 April 2022
I worked as a chef for Beefeater. Progression within the company is limited unless you move to a different region. Pay was mediocre at best and it’d get deducted for breaks I wasn’t able to take. The management bonus scheme is based on them hitting their targets and so we would be told we weren’t allowed to order cleaning supplies and be left short staffed on shift because they’d gone over their predicted budget. 16 hour days 6-7 days a week were common especially when short staffed.
Pros
Most of the team were great people and easy to get along with
Cons
Long hours, very little training, poor staff retention, overworked for the money

Great at first
Front of House Staff (Current Employee) - Manchester, Greater Manchester - 17 April 2022
Loved the job when first started, after a year or so in the same place and postion it gets a bit grating. No clear distinction between the dm / team members and you're expected to do everything despite your wage. The people are all friendly and i enjoy the customer service side of things, it's just not worth the wage.
Pros
easy to train
Cons
no progression, terrible communication, often expected to go from a late shift to an early shift the next day

Productive and friendly environment work
Grill Chef (Former Employee) - Eastleigh, Hampshire - 13 April 2022
Working at Whitbread PLC was a great opportunity to learn and practice English language meeting great people who gave me amazing memories. The work environment was nice and made shifts go easy even in very busy moments.

Great Company???
Head of (Former Employee) - Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire - 12 April 2022
Worked there for just under 5 years and in that time saw 4 restructured! Each time with more than 500 redundancies, to only re recruit the positions they had made redundant. CEO brilliant, directors below don’t have a clue! Changed from a friendly company to a Tesco, aggressive company that can’t keep its staff as no direction! Great in hotels but head office, keep away from.
Pros
Friendly workers
Cons
No direction.

Decent workplace
Night Team Member (Current Employee) - Peterborough - 4 April 2022
It is a good place to work. The nights are mostly quiet. You do get some party people from time to time, but as you are always working with a team mate, it's nothing that can not be handled if you are a person that don’t like conflict. No difficult jobs, the system is easy and intuitive to use.
Pros
Good work life balance
Cons
Nothing to worry about

No work life balance
Restaurant Manager (Former Employee) - United Kingdom - 28 March 2022
Always expected to put the company first, and to be on call in case of sickness. Harassed on days off by line managers who schedule you for the late nights and weekends they refuse to work. Unless you’re friends with your manager outside of work, expect the worst shifts and to cover for their friends when it’s time to drink in the managers on site flat. No paid overtime, and a constant battle to “deliver labour” in line with constant cost cutting from central operations. Severely lost their way as a company over the past decade, a CEO that ruined the banks is now ruining what used to be the pinnacle of restaurant experiences. Avoid
