Nice people, bad pay
Customer Assistant (Former Employee) - Bath, Somerset - 12 November 2023
The people who work here are very lovely and great to work with. Unfortunately the pay is minimal which is a downside, however may be a good job for someone in their teens/wanting a first job.

Insights into WHSmith
Areas for improvement
- Sense of belonging
- Fair pay for job
- Energising work tasks
Poor
Store Leader (Former Employee) - Kent - 8 November 2023
Over worked, underpaid, no real reward (a free red bull does not count as a Xmas bonus as a thank you for hard work). Very low staff morale although colleagues were all lovely

Ok
Team Leader (Former Employee) - Northampton, Northamptonshire - 6 November 2023
Lone working, not good pay. Management don't look after staff to well. Good thing is staff members mainly all get along which is good and relaxed. Friendly customers most of the time in the morning.

An okay company.
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Hampshire - 30 October 2023
WHSmith is a decent company. In my short time with the company I didn’t experience anything negative. The employees are given plenty of discounts and a decent amount of holiday.
Pros
Employee discount

Push push push
Store Manager (Current Employee) - United Kingdom - 27 October 2023
Average wage, high expectation of workload. Continually short staffed, whilst the company continue to reap profits, pay bonuses to the board, continually employing extra staff, the stores have the wage budgets cut year after year.

Easy job but low pay
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - London, Greater London - 17 October 2023
The job is very easy and the pay reflects that. The staff is friendly but the management expects too much stuff from us. There is no yearly bonus or incentives.
Pros
Flexible hours
Cons
pay

Okay
Sales Advisor (Former Employee) - East London, Greater London - 28 September 2023
Friendly staff but manager was disorganised with the schedule. Expected to learn way too much in such a short period and often new staff are given undesirable jobs.

Jobs at WHSmith
Good workplace
Retail Assistant (Former Employee) - Chelmsford, Essex - 22 September 2023
Coworkers were friendly and kind. Management could be rude at times. Overall a good place to work. Pay is minimum wage but fair as you are not overworked.

Minimum wage pay
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Brighton - 22 August 2023
They pay you minimum wage. £7.50 for a 20 year old. Ridiculous. I do the same work as everyone else. Can’t imagine being under 18 and working here. £4.55 is ridiculous for difficult work

super busy but decent workplace
Sales Assistant (Current Employee) - Glasgow, Glasgow - 20 August 2023
super busy, high footfall and lot of work but decent workplace, great colleagues, good discount, can sometimes be stressful and have to be vigilant all the time

Productive and fun work place with great staff
Warehouse Assistant (Current Employee) - Swindon, Wiltshire - 15 August 2023
Good company with amazing staff. Quite a few benefits including employe discount and overtime during busy periods. Retention bonus around end of each year. Few issues with management or rather lack of it, nothing that can't be dealt with if you're dedicated to the job and have the right attitude. Hours and working patterns are fairly flexible. Overall not a bad place compare to other similar distribution centres.

It's Okay
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Orpington, Greater London - 6 August 2023
The pay was okay & the staff are nice. The area mangers and above expect way too much of the staff who worked in the stores, especially in peak seasons, leaving the stores short staffed and the customers getting understandably annoyed by this. Also, you get what seems very false praise, if any, from said people who don't seem to care. Don't go into this expecting to only to do your contracted hours every week as you'd most likely get called in when someone doesn't come into work because of "illness".
Pros
Staff Discount comes in useful
Cons
Staff shortages, Underpayed when having to take on more responsabilities, Managment, Customers

Basic workplace
Cashier/Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Suffolk - 2 August 2023
Very boring job, was freezing in the winter because they didn't have money for the heating. Uniforms were supplied in the wrong sizes. Hours were regular but pay was awful. Jobs were mundane and confusing

Nice busy place to work
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh - 21 July 2023
I worked in a travel branch of WHSmith and I enjoyed my time there. Given it’s a travel branch it can be pretty busy which means there is always something to do. Managers and team leaders were nice and I don’t really have a bad word to say about working there.
Pros
Staff meal deal, Good with breaks
Cons
On your feet for long hours

Good
Sales Associate (Current Employee) - Braintree - 13 July 2023
Slightly above minimum wage, job not too complicated, management is alright. No room for progression if starting as a sales associate, unless you get close to management and push for it
