Working night on a permanent shift pattern

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
The best paid and easiest driving job about.Management is all the same in transport, stressed. Shifts all start a different times, to suit the different waves of loads.

Pros

Good job for security

Cons

Driving nights. You can do it or you cannot.

Not enough resources or support to be successful in the role.

I was twilight manager. Expect to work til midnight 5 days a week with your days off not together. It's challenging to get all the delivery worked as you won't have enough staff along with all the other tasks needing completed. So you start working stock yourself to get ahead while also locking up and cashing up the store. Meanwhile other managers in charge of cafe or bakery/butchery finish earlier, have much less tasks, smaller departments have a much easier life. It's not a good feeling when everyone else is off home at 4pm telling you "good luck, oh make sure shop is spot on tomorrow morning." That's after they've sat about doing nothing all morning.

Pros

Meet lots of people.

Cons

Impossible work load. Not enough staff. Long hours.

Decent

Decent place to work to earn money. Nice if you are a people person. Good holidays and a nice staff team. Can swap departments sometimes. I enjoyed working here whilst at university.

Pros

Pay on time, overtime available

Productive workplace

Productive place to work, opportunity to progress from customer assistant to team leader but from experience, the 20p an hour pay rise is not worth it.Management is supportive and there's the opportuity to become multiskilled across different departments.

Pros

Decent wage and benefits

Cons

Awful contracted hours

Fun, chilled, terrible management

Management haven’t got a clue.Night staff are stretched beyond belief, 80% of load is worked during the night time period of 7.5 hoursHaving to book holiday 1 year in advance to get the dates you want

Pros

Fun colleagues. 15% discount card.

Cons

Hard to get holiday. Bad management. Lack of appreciation.

Staff nice to work with

People good to work with but workload can be heavy on night shift. Pay is good for shift work and overtime always available. Need to employ a few more team members

Fast working environment, fantastic work colleagues

The job is difficult, it's long hours and the workload is big. The thing that makes Morrisons are the staff because they make the day better.Majority of stores offer hot food in a run staff canteen with cheap food

Pros

£10 per hour, decent holiday allocation, onsite catered canteen with cheap hot food, Unlimited staff discount with 2 additional cards for family/friends capped at £1000 a year

Cons

Long hours, little staff, underinvestment in-store.

Not a great company

Not the best place of work. Managers are treated badly and hard work is never appreciated. Very toxic working environment and negativity all across.

Pros

Salary

Cons

Long hours, no support, micromanaged

Busy schedules

I was trained on-site as a fishmonger. I worked on the whole of market street as well as checkouts and the canteen. No chance of advancement. This was my reason for leaving. I was with the company for 2.5 years. As much as I loved the fishmonger side I was moved to the deli which I didn’t like. Another reason for leaving.

Pros

Canteen, yearly bonus, above minimum wage.

Cons

Only a 20hr contract with barely any overtime

Constant changing management and restructures

There is a constant change in store, department managers meaning it is hard to build a rapport with the management team. Also, frequent restructures mean you are under fret of redundancy.

Pros

Good pay and benefits

Cons

poor work/family life

Good pay. Bad management

Very negative atmosphere. I worked in 3 stores and all staff have negative attitude which impacts all new starters. Micromanagement from the top. Toxic culture. The pay is very good but I feel like a culture change is in order. This will help with labour turnover and staff retention. Too many ‘managers’ when in fact they are just key holders and working under pressure so tasks get passed down the line.4/7 days sounds good but 11 hours turns into 14 when you are not allowed to go home until your work is checked and no sympathy when frontline colleagues don’t show and are not manager

Pros

Salary. Staff discount

Cons

Long hours

Varied roles within the one store.

Terrible management. No morale between staff. Running round like a headless chicken to receive very little. Paid one wage for 3 peoples work. Hardly legal some days, felt embarrassed to represent this poor level of service.

It went downhill fast

I was hired as the Covid-19 Pandemic was just beginning. The store was organised, management supportive and helpful, and as a Checkout Team Leader, the responsibilities were expected but not overwhelming.Fast forward 12 months and everything started changing for the worse. Management had been given a shake up and more responsibilities were piled onto the 3 checkout team leaders. The shifts are non consistent, management only bothered when someone superior is visiting, any other time they leave you in the firing line when it's busy and there's customers queueing. Overtime gets cut and as a result there's days where there's hardly any staffColleagues are fantastic couldn't ask for a better team but similarly they're all feeling the strain. You have to be organised and prepared for anything and plan hours before to ensure that the day just runs smoothly. And I feel like all this is only going to get worse.

Pros

Helpful colleagues who quickly make you part of the team

Cons

Too much responsibility, poor management, skipped breaks, not enough hours allocated to the departments

Great place to work with progression and secondment opportunities

Really enjoyed my time at the company, allowed me to really grow as a manager and move my career forward, started as a sales assistant working up to a regional field role which allowed me to gain commercial awareness from the wider business

Pros

Decent salary with options to increase with store movements and yearly reviews

Cons

Long hours - travel time

Poor work life balance

Not for a family person, as job load increases with lots of pressure, lost 250+ hours from night team since i started 10 months ago but yet expectation is still the same with added jobs added weekly

Pros

None

Fast paced but really good fun

Fast paced action , work on a variety of departments which is good as it keeps it fresh each day. It is good to meet new customers each day and see regular faces return. Staff are always really nice and helpfull.

Stressed depressed working environment

Expect hours to be changed online with no notice. Any physical needs to complete your job must be constantly reminded of to your management, or if remembered veiwed as a weakness. You really are just a number here. Lone working , no company benefits that are worth staying for. Good luck trying to have a decent home and work ratio at this company

Pros

Ten pound Christmas gift voucher

Cons

Canteen unreliable fidge is too small to keep everyone's food chilled and fresh, poor unhappy management, lack of communication, lone working, few company benefits.

A terrible place to work, with horrible managers.

When I first worked here, I was a part time student so I could only do a few hours in the week, however one manager in my store practically forced me each week to come in on the day that I needed to go to university, she'd do this every week so I had to fight every week to get this one day off, I was pressured to take on too much work and was missing valuable parts of my education and personal time. I was working every single day. I was on a 12 hour contract forcefully doing 30 plus a week! AVOID!!!

Pros

Good pay

Cons

Management, pressure, non flexible

Fast paced and practical work, need to work or challenge management a lot of the time

Typical day is okay to be honest, it is great if there is a budget or some sort of organisation within the management team and colleagues. Can be most pressured in specific times of the day and ques build, customers and the public in general begin to become frustrated and angry towards you and your staff. This is usually really early of a morning, around rush hour and school time within the afternoon. The daily tasks are no issues the balance between paperwork and running the back is healthy and there is never nothing to learn from day to day, no matter how long you work there for!

Pros

Great canteen, pay and benefits such as insurance deals and chances to progress career wise.

Cons

Really really poor management, little to no communication and stressful a lot of the time, you have the be strong minded to deal with every issue day in day out, in retail as everything is always drawn back or short or lack of budget and knowledge to help
