Thank you for taking the time to share your experience whilst working for Yodel. It’s great to hear you have settled into the Yodel family and enjoying your role. I’ll be sure to share your feedback with the wider team. Thanks again, Team Yodel

Very picky and stuck up company

Worked here for 6 months for the agency and they got rid of me like I was nothing! They will get rid of you for the slightest tiniest little issue so make sure you're a 100% perfect driver or you'll be gone! I literally knocked a tiny bit of plastic off a truck in severe rainy weather. Also, defects on trucks are a plenty so make sure you check everything thoroughly! People in office are quite rude and don't talk to you very well, either!

Pros

Good hourly rate

Cons

Watched like a hawk, defective and dirty equipment, rude office staff.

Timewasters

Invited me to drive 75 miles and back which cost me in petrol on the false promise of a vacancy in my postcode area - turned out there wasn't one because (as I suspected) the job isn't remotely feasible on 80p a drop in rural areas - told me it was a different rate on the phone £1 and that I could work to my own schedule which also wasn't correct so it seems like they over sold me the job to get me to sign up for a job that wasn't actually there. Did they know this before? I don't know but I would have thought so. Paid every fortnight (why not just every week I don't know) and first payment might not come for 4 weeks. All that way for a 10 minute presentation in a manky staff locker room to sit on a seat that looked liked it had been pulled out of a skip to basically just fill in a form and hand over all my personal documents to a complete stranger who took them away to another room for 10 minutes - I've heard about these jobs so maybe delivery work isn't for me sounds like a nightmare job and if this is how they treat you before you start working for them then..

Pros

None

Cons

Inept and disorganised charlatans

Pay doesn’t even cover your fuel

They advertise delivery drivers that can get paid £18-20 per hour but this is completely false. They pay you 99p per parcel and even when optimising your route it will still take you an hour to deliver 10 parcels. No fuel paid for, don’t pay for training and barely respond to emails or phone calls.

Cons

Poor pay, poor management, no mileage

Hard work but good work-life balance

It can be quite hard, frustrating work, out in the rain / snow / summer heat. Sacks of parcels are dropped off at your home which you then need to scan, sort and load into your vehicle (unpaid). Depending on where about in the country you are these times will vary (for Scotland, we have to wait for the overnight trailers to come in to ensure we get all the next day delivery parcels, this can sometimes be delayed (by traffic, accidents on the motorway etc) meaning, on rare occasions, you don't get parcels until 2 or 3 PM. Generally, they'll arrive at about 1:30 though). In Scotland, at least, it's not really viable for someone with school age kids. You can download your "tour" as your parcels leave the depot so you can pre-sort / plan your route before the parcels arrive.I see a lot of reviews saying it "takes too long", but as with any job you'll be slow to get started even with the best intentions because it's new. The longer you're in the job the faster you'll get through the deliveries once you learn the shortcuts (driving / walking), safe locations to leave parcels etc and you'll find you can do a lot more parcels in a shorter period of time. It's a fun job if you're the right kind of person, need a lot of patience as it can be frustrating when it seems like nobody is gonna be in that day.If you can get 100 parcels per day you'll be doing ok but it's obviously limited to how many people order stuff online. If you're in a low volume area then you'll need to pick up another route and do 2 or look elsewhere.I won't be working there much longer if there is -

Pros

Working hours are good

Cons

Not enough pay, work 6 days, no fuel allowance, do your own tax, no holiday pay

Avoid at all cost

So the depot was in Coventry, so they had drivers that would your load to your house which is nice but they’re supposed to come from 8am-11am but the earliest I’ve received them is 11am must of the time it’s 2pm and you have to stay at home because you can’t miss them. When you receive the parcels it’ll take you an hour to hour and half sorting and you have to plan your own route. The pick your days thing is not true I had Saturdays off and ever since I started working with yodel I’ve always had someone come drop parcels on days I do not work then get asked to deliver them and if you don’t they’ll hit you with failure to deliver however many parcels were due out then and it’s £2 per parcel you didn’t deliver which is crazy when you weren’t supposed to be working and the managers will have ago at you and be rude to you and try scare you into doing it on your days off. There is next to no training and you have no idea who your managers are or anything. And they say the pay is £16-£18 but in reality when you calculate the time it takes you to sort 100 parcels and all the times you have to fail a delivery because they’re not in and no one els will take it and there’s no safe place because you can’t just leave it at someone’s door or front porch that 100 parcels turn into like 70 or 60 so you’ll do like 5 hours and be paid £8-£10 an hour and on top of that managers will deduct that even more for the smallest things. I worked there for 3 weeks and then when they decided to bring parcels on my day off then say you failed to deliver them because i refused to be forced to work when there -

Not been paid

I would not recommend working here due to the fact I have not been paid for the work I have done for them. I have tried on many occasions to speak to the manager about this but all goes ignored, stressful to say the least. I have now taken this further through a solicitor, so I would expect a CCJ heading their way.

The more you do the more they give you the following day

What is the best part of working at the company? Some good people at Middleton depot but there are more who aren’t What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Getting parcels delivered to a really tight schedule What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Toxic a lot of back stabbing if your face fits you will be fine What is a typical day like for you at the company?Arrive at 6am then sort and put in order all your parcels load them onto your van and hopefully you will be ready to set off around 8.30am

Expect the most and give the least

You have to be very patient and enjoy driving a lot to be able to stay at this company. Turnover is very high and I've seen most people leave after 2-6 weeks. If you are lucky enough to be given a route you can learn and enjoy then the job will be a lot more tolerable but that's simply because you are out on your own delivering. Management is consistently making all drivers work harder and longer hours with little to no pay or benefit increase. They do not communicate anything well so rules spread like heresay throughout the depot. They do not enforce fines unless 'necessary' which leads to distinct periods of time, where business is slow, that drivers are suddenly fined more often and heavily for common practise. They pay you per successfully delivered/collected parcel, which means drivers are unfairly expected to wait upon parcels and sort them themselves in their own unpaid time. The workplace culture is very negative and most employees including night staff, day staff, office and drivers consistently complain about recurring issues including management, pay, hours, fines, unpaid delays, and general organisation of business. The hardest part of my job is dealing with rightfully unhappy customers when I am forced to bring them parcels in horrendous condition due to the lack of care in any of the depot staff. I am unable to refuse any deliveries for any reason, recently now, including parcels that are not due to be delivered on that day due to an inability for the depot to organise and manage storage of parcels. You are self employed so technically you can choose your hours -

absolute shambles

spend all morning waiting for parcels to arrive at door, never know what time they arrive, then spend an hour of unpaid work sorting them all in order of location and load into car, drive around like a headless chicken all day with little to no help from management, they expect the most from you but in return pay you the least. get off work end of day around 7pm for a horrendous £30 day, of which you have to put £15 back into fuel because they lie about paying your fuel. hours will eat your life before you know it all for close to nothing in return. full day of hard work around 6 hours for what, a meal deal?

Pros

can go shop on shift

Cons

everything else

Where to even begin?

- One afternoon's 'training' on site and you're dumped with parcels on your own from day 1 -Depending on when you start, might not get paid for a whole month-Fuel not covered -Vehicle expenses not covered -Insurance not covered, deducted from pay -Poor communication from senior personnel -They claim you can be as flexible as you want but that wasn't the case in my experience. The longer you stay the more the demands-Delivery to offroad places which is taxing on the vehicle -Expectation to deliver parcels outside your typical route -Exposed to the elements due to nature of the job - Have to use your own mobile and Data so buy a cheap phone - For less than £1 per parcel you're expected to be a customer service representative as well since Yodel give customers your number - If you deliver parcels early, you get docked pay for being efficient at your job which is ridiculous-Overall not a sustainable long term job if you want to progress. Stop gap job really.

Pros

Once you're on the road its okay

Cons

Full time hours for part time pay

At 80p a parcel you’re pretty much paying them to workTypical day 6-10 hours long and you’ll be making between £60 and £100 per dayIt’s never stable work and is very high mileageSome days I made £15 after fuel

Easy to get days off

Terrible company exploits its employees your just a number here.

If you like doing 14 hour days then this job is for you . You're just a number . Most delivery is self employed they keep a few employed for the mainly rural or city centre stuff the self employed dont want , stuff they won't do . They closed the Sheffield depot and moved to Alfreton adding 60 miles a day and upto 2 1/2 hours to my day . The most enjoyable part of the job was giving them my notice .

Payment deductions

Whilst working as a delivery contractor, Yodel would deduct money from wages based on pictures of a delivery. It claims it did not comply with their standards, irrespective of the the fact that delivery was completed and the company was still paid by the customer for the delivery. Not fair
