Roles of this type may sit within collaborative teams tasked with designing and implementing comprehensive security architectures that protect enterprise assets, manage complex threat landscapes, and ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks. The work could involve partnering across infrastructure, development and operations teams to establish security standards, evaluate emerging technologies, and translate business requirements into robust architectural solutions.

What you would do

Typical responsibilities could include:

  • Designing and implementing security architectures across cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP) and on-premises environments
  • Conducting security assessments and threat modelling to identify vulnerabilities and recommend mitigations
  • Collaborating with development teams to integrate security practices into CI/CD pipelines and microservices architectures
  • Establishing and maintaining security standards, policies and compliance frameworks (including CSDR requirements)
  • Managing and optimising security infrastructure components such as DMZ configurations, F5 load balancers and identity management systems
  • Evaluating and recommending security tools, technologies and architectural patterns
  • Providing guidance to teams on secure coding practices, API security and distributed systems security

What you could bring

Most roles of this type require the following:

  • CISSP or equivalent cybersecurity certification
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Proven experience designing and implementing security architectures in enterprise environments
  • Strong knowledge of cloud security across Azure, AWS or GCP
  • Experience with containerisation technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform)
  • Understanding of secure software development practices, APIs, microservices and distributed systems
  • Knowledge of compliance frameworks and standards (CSDR, regulatory requirements)
  • Experience with SQL, Linux and Windows systems administration
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to translate technical concepts for business stakeholders

What roles of this type could offer

Most roles of this type offer the following, dependent on the industry and seniority of the role:

  • Opportunity to influence security strategy and architectural decisions across the organisation
  • Scope to work with cutting-edge technologies and emerging security practices
  • Collaborative environment with skilled engineering and operations teams
  • Potential for professional development and continued certification
  • Flexible working arrangements, including hybrid and remote options where supported
  • Competitive day rate of £250–280 per day (contract basis)
