Shopify Tech Lead

Hybrid (3 days in the office)| UK (Liverpool / Leeds) | Full-time

At Velstar, we build sophisticated Shopify solutions for ambitious eCommerce brands. We’re looking for a Shopify Tech Lead to play a key role in shaping how we design, build and scale high-quality frontend experiences across our Shopify projects.

This role is ideal for a senior developer ready to step into technical leadership.Someone who wants to stay hands-on, influence technical direction, and raise the bar for frontend quality across the team.

The role

As Shopify Tech Lead, you’ll be the go-to expert for all things Shopify, working closely with the Development Team Lead to oversee delivery, guide technical decisions, and support the growth of the frontend team.

You’ll lead complex Shopify projects end to end, act as the primary escalation point for technical challenges, and help ensure our solutions are scalable, performant and built to last. Alongside delivery, you’ll shape the frontend tech stack, mentor developers, and contribute to the strategic direction of the team.

What you’ll be doing

  • Acting as the Shopify technical authority, collaborating closely with the Development Team Lead

  • Leading the delivery of high-quality, complex Shopify projects from start to finish

  • Designing and building scalable, maintainable Shopify themes and applications

  • Developing with Liquid, JavaScript, HTML and CSS to a consistently high standard

  • Optimising Shopify stores for performance, reliability and non-functional requirements

  • Serving as the primary escalation point for complex technical issues

  • Mentoring and supporting junior and mid-level developers through guidance and knowledge-sharing

  • Assessing the feasibility of UX designs and collaborating with UX Designers and Project Managers to improve user-focused experiences

  • Owning frontend tools, technologies and best practices across the team

  • Identifying opportunities to improve development efficiency and documentation

  • Helping define technical KPIs and using them to drive continuous improvement

What we’re looking for

You’re a highly experienced Shopify developer with strong technical judgment and a collaborative leadership style. You enjoy solving complex problems, guiding others, and translating technical thinking into practical outcomes.

You’ll likely have:

  • Extensive experience delivering Shopify projects at scale

  • Expert-level knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Liquid templating and Shopify APIs

  • Experience in a senior developer or tech lead role

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to technical challenges

  • The ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Hydrogen / Oxygen

  • Knowledge of React-based frameworks (Next.js, Remix), TypeScript

  • Familiarity with modern UI frameworks such as Tailwind CSS or Chakra UI
