Full job description

Overview

City Access Scaffolding Ltd is looking for a Graduate Scaffold Design Engineer to join our in-house design team and work directly alongside our current Scaffold Design Engineer. You will have the opportunity to work closely with our estimating, commercial and operations teams to gain valuable experience across multiple disciplines.

This is suited to a graduate engineer who wants to develop a specialist career in scaffold design, temporary works and practical construction engineering.

This is not a generic desk-based graduate role. You will work on live scaffolding projects where the design needs to be safe, practical, buildable and commercially sensible. You will learn how scaffold design works in the real world, from initial site information through to drawings, calculations, design risk assessments and support for the scaffold teams carrying out the works.

The Role

You will assist with the design of scaffolding and temporary works in accordance with relevant British and European codes of practice, UK construction requirements, health and safety legislation, NASC guidance and City Access procedures.

You will support the preparation of scaffold design drawings, design calculations, technical information, design risk assessments and design packs for clients, principal contractors, site teams and our internal operations team.

· Assisting with scaffold design drawings and calculations

· Supporting the preparation of design packs for clients, principal contractors and site teams

· Reviewing client drawings, site surveys and project information

· Helping develop scaffold solutions that are safe, practical, buildable and commercially sensible

· Applying engineering knowledge to assess the structural integrity of scaffolding and temporary works structures

· Supporting design checks ranging from simple hand calculations through to structural analysis software

· Using CAD, 3D modelling and other design software as part of the design process

· Attending site visits where required to collect and assess site information

· Liaising with clients, construction professionals and the City Access estimating, commercial and operations teams

· Assisting with design risk assessments and helping to design out hazards where reasonably practicable

· Learning the practicalities of scaffold erection, use, alteration and dismantling

· Maintaining accurate records of drawings, calculations, revisions and issued design information

· Supporting technical queries from clients, supervisors and scaffold teams

You will be supported by our current Scaffold Design Engineer while you develop your knowledge of scaffold design, temporary works, site requirements, software, industry guidance and City Access design procedures.

What You Will Learn

Role of the Scaffold Design Engineer

You will learn the role and responsibilities of a scaffold design engineer, including the duty to produce safe, practical and properly considered designs that protect the public, clients, site teams and City Access.

Legislation, regulations and company procedures

You will develop your understanding of current UK legislation, construction regulations, health and safety duties, temporary works requirements and City Access procedures.

Codes of practice and industry guidance

You will learn how to apply relevant codes, standards and guidance, including TG20, SG4, EN 12811-1 and other applicable temporary works and scaffold design guidance.

Production of design drawings

You will learn how to produce clear scaffold design drawings using City Access drawing standards, CAD software, 3D modelling software and relevant drawing conventions.

On-site information collection

You will learn how to carry out site surveys, understand site constraints, collect the right design information and identify issues that may affect scaffold design, erection, use or dismantling.

Design risk assessments

You will learn how to complete design risk assessments, identify foreseeable hazards and design out or reduce risk where reasonably practicable.

Buildability and commercial awareness

You will learn how design decisions affect labour, materials, programme, safe access, site delivery and commercial viability.

Structural analysis

You will learn how to use structural analysis software, 3D modelling tools and hand calculations to support scaffold and temporary works design. You will also learn how to check, question and understand the results produced by design software.

Complex scaffold structures

You will develop an understanding of more complex scaffold structures, their behaviour, design considerations and common issues that need to be managed during design and delivery.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for an ambitious graduate engineer who wants to work in a fast-moving construction environment and develop into a specialist scaffold design role.

You should have:

· A degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a similar engineering discipline

· A good understanding of engineering principles

· Strong attention to detail

· Good written and verbal communication skills

· A practical approach to problem solving

· Confidence working with drawings, measurements and technical information

· The ability to work across multiple live projects

· A proactive approach to learning and development

· The ability to work with clients, internal teams and site-based personnel

· Good IT skills and a willingness to learn design, CAD and 3D modelling software

Experience with AutoCAD, 3D modelling software or structural analysis software would be useful. Previous scaffold design experience is not required. Full training and support will be provided, but candidates must have a strong engineering foundation and a genuine interest in construction and temporary works.
