About the Role

An opportunity has arisen to join a team-orientated and motivated company that is modern and flourishing.

We are redefining how telecom operators manage and evolve their core networks, driving the convergence of multi-generation networks (3G/4G/5G) in a cost-effective and agile way.

Following strong growth and recent successes, we are seeking a Head of Software Engineering to scale our technology capability and support an ambitious business roadmap. Based in Dorset, you will lead engineering strategy and execution, reporting directly to the CEO and acting as a key member of the senior leadership team.

This role combines technology leadership, organisational scaling, and customer-facing technical credibility within a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

This full-time permanent role will be based at our main office in Dorset with hybrid remote working.

Working hours are Monday to Friday 37.5 hours per week

Key Responsibilities

Technology Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and execute the company’s engineering and technology strategy aligned to business objectives
  • Establish robust engineering practices, delivery processes, and organisational structure
  • Drive adoption of modern architectures (cloud, microservices, observability, resilience)
  • Own technology roadmap, platform evolution, and technical standards

Engineering Delivery & Operations

  • Oversee system architecture, design decisions, and major technology changes
  • Ensure high-quality, secure, and reliable delivery of carrier-grade products.
  • Implement and monitor engineering KPIs (performance, reliability, velocity, quality)
  • Champion DevOps, CI/CD, and automated testing practices

People & Organisation

  • Lead, and scale high-performing engineering team
  • Foster a strong engineering culture focused on ownership, innovation, and collaboration
  • Manage performance, career development, and team structure

Customer & Commercial Engagement

  • Act as a technical ambassador with customers, partners, and industry stakeholders
  • Support sales and business development through technical expertise and solution positioning
  • Lead or contribute to customer presentations, demos, and executive briefings
  • Provide assurance on system reliability, scalability, and future roadmap

Innovation & Industry Leadership

  • Maintain a strong point of view on telecom industry trends and emerging technologies
  • Drive innovation initiatives aligned to customer and market needs
  • Contribute to thought leadership (whitepapers, blogs, industry events, webinars)

Required Experience & Skills

Leadership & Delivery

  • Proven experience leading engineering teams (typically 10–30 engineers)
  • Strong track record of delivering complex software systems in production environments
  • Experience operating in agile development environments with modern engineering practices
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on technical understanding

Technical Expertise

  • Strong background in software engineering and system architecture
  • Experience with cloud platforms (preferably AWS) and distributed systems
  • Knowledge of modern development stacks (e.g. TypeScript, React, APIs, NoSQL)
  • Experience with CI/CD, DevOps, and automated testing frameworks

Telecom Domain Expertise

  • Strong experience in telecom networks and protocols (e.g. SS7, SIP/RTP, Diameter)
  • Understanding of core network technologies (2G–5G, IMS)
  • Experience with carrier-grade, high-availability systems (5 9s uptime)
  • Familiarity with high-throughput, high-capacity systems

Stakeholder & Communication Skills

  • Strong communication and presentation skills, including customer-facing experience
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into business value
  • Experience working cross-functionally with product, sales, and leadership teams

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working with telecom products such as STP, DRA, SBC, SMSC, or Softswitch
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker, and virtualisation platforms
  • Experience interpreting IETF RFCs and 3GPP specifications
  • Background in test automation and performance engineering
