We’re seeking an enthusiastic engineer to join the SSEN Maintenance and Inspection team in the Thames region, supporting the Southern Distribution Network.

You’ll lead EHV project, maintenance, and protection work (22kV–132kV), including outage planning, protection testing, and coordination with National Grid and internal teams to deliver safe, efficient solutions.

The role includes managing capital, maintenance, and repair projects, maintaining accurate IT records, and ensuring financial accountability. Operational authorisation up to 132kV (or working toward it) is required, along with knowledge of ESQCR and outage risk.

Strong project management and leadership skills will help you thrive in this role, along with a genuine enthusiasm for improving how we work. You’ll also be a key representative of SSEN, building positive relationships with our stakeholders and helping ensure a great experience for our customers.

You will:

  • Developing scoping documentation and Protection Diagrams (MC&P).
  • Carrying out EHV protection testing in conjunction with the maintenance teams.
  • To act as a lead for support when requested to assist with the maintenance units delivery.
  • Carrying out adhoc projects in line with our RIIO-ED2 delivery.
  • Using SAP authorisations to support wider teams across Distribution / CMI department.

You have:

  • HNC qualification (or equivalent), or currently working towards it.
  • Ideally a 33kV SAP working towards 132kV SAP authorisations, with salary progression for specific 132kV authorisations.
  • Experience in the design or commissioning of power system protection, ideally within distribution networks.
  • Strong knowledge of protection relays and panels, CT/VT sizing, protection grading studies, and producing accurate AC/DC drawings.
  • Familiarity with OMICRON test sets and software, plus SSEN Protection Level 3 & 4 authorisations and progression toward Level 5.

This role involves travel across various locations to support business needs. To enable you to fulfil these responsibilities, as a role requirement, the company will provide access to a vehicle for work-related travel.

The requirement will be reviewed on an ongoing basis, and if the company car policy criteria are met, there will be an opportunity to join the company car scheme. Provision of a company car or cash allowance does not form part of the contractual terms and conditions of employment for this role.

A valid driving licence is essential.
