Progress Teachers are recruiting passionate and adaptable SEN Secondary Teachers to join a growing specialist education setting in Tameside.
We are particularly interested in hearing from teachers with a specialism in:
- Maths
- English
- Science
The school supports secondary-aged pupils with a range of special educational needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition and Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.
This is an excellent opportunity for a teacher who wants to deliver creative, highly personalised learning within a smaller and more supportive classroom environment.
The Role
You will plan and deliver engaging lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4, with a particular focus on your specialist subject.
Classes are small, allowing teachers to build strong relationships with pupils and tailor learning around individual abilities, interests and Education, Health and Care Plan outcomes.
Many pupils may have experienced barriers to education or require additional support with communication, emotional regulation, confidence and engagement. You will therefore need to be patient, resilient and able to adapt traditional teaching methods.
You will work closely with teaching assistants, pastoral staff, senior leaders, families and external professionals to ensure pupils receive consistent academic and emotional support.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons within Maths, English or Science.
- Teach pupils across Key Stages 3 and 4, including GCSE, Entry Level or Functional Skills where appropriate.
- Adapt teaching materials and lesson delivery to meet individual learning needs.
- Use pupils’ EHCPs, support plans and assessment information to inform teaching.
- Set ambitious but realistic academic and personal-development targets.
- Create a calm, structured and inclusive classroom environment.
- Use trauma-informed and positive behaviour-support strategies.
- Support pupils with autism, ADHD, SEMH needs and communication difficulties.
- Identify gaps in learning and deliver targeted interventions.
- Monitor, assess and record pupil progress.
- Provide constructive feedback that helps pupils recognise their achievements.
- Work collaboratively with teaching assistants and support staff.
- Contribute to annual reviews, pupil progress meetings and educational reports.
- Communicate effectively with parents, carers and external professionals.
- Support the development of pupils’ independence, confidence and life skills.
- Contribute to curriculum development within your specialist subject.
- Maintain high standards of safeguarding, professional conduct and record-keeping.
Essential Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status, Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
- Experience teaching within a secondary-school environment.
- Strong subject knowledge within Maths, English or Science.
- Experience planning, delivering and assessing lessons at Key Stage 3 or Key Stage 4.
- The ability to differentiate learning for pupils working at different academic levels.
- A calm, compassionate and consistent approach to behaviour.
- Strong communication, organisation and classroom-management skills.
- A commitment to safeguarding children and young people.
- The resilience and flexibility required to work within a specialist SEND environment.
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience within a specialist SEND school, alternative provision or pupil-referral unit.
- Experience teaching pupils with autism or SEMH needs.
- Experience delivering GCSE, Entry Level or Functional Skills qualifications.
- Knowledge of EHCPs and annual review processes.
- Training in trauma-informed practice, Team Teach, PRICE or another recognised positive behaviour-support approach.
- Experience working within small classes or delivering personalised learning programmes.
Applications are welcomed from experienced SEND teachers as well as strong mainstream secondary teachers who are looking to move into specialist education.
What Is on Offer
- Small class sizes and high levels of classroom support.
- A supportive and approachable senior leadership team.
- Opportunities to shape and develop the curriculum.
- Comprehensive induction and ongoing professional development.
- Specialist SEND and behaviour-support training.
- Opportunities for career progression as the provision continues to grow.
- Company pension.
- Health and wellbeing support.
- On-site parking.
- Referral programme.
Safeguarding
The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
The successful candidate will be required to complete an enhanced DBS check, barred-list check, references, identity checks and all other relevant safer-recruitment procedures.
Apply today with an up-to-date CV and details of your subject specialism to be considered for this SEN Secondary Teacher opportunity.
