Full job description

Step into the world of London’s most iconic detective! The Sherlock Holmes Museum is looking for an enthusiastic and engaging Visitor Services Assistant to join our team.

We’re seeking someone who shares a passion for Sherlock Holmes and his stories, and who thrives in a lively, visitor-focused environment. If you enjoy meeting people from all walks of life, have a friendly and approachable manner, and can stay calm under pressure, we’d love to hear from you.

What you’ll do:

  • Welcome and assist visitors, ensuring every guest has a memorable experience.
  • Deliver excellent customer service both in the museum and shop.
  • Sell products, restock shelves, and maintain a tidy and organised shop floor.
  • Lead short guided tours and talks with confidence and enthusiasm.
  • Dress in period costume (Victorian police officer or traditional attire, provided by the museum) and engage with visitors for photos.
  • Support the smooth daily running of the museum and shop.

What we’re looking for:

  • Strong customer service skills with a focus on creating positive visitor experiences.
  • Previous experience in hospitality, retail, or similar visitor-facing roles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A proactive, team-oriented attitude with the ability to adapt in a fast-paced setting.
  • Familiarity with Sherlock Holmes stories is highly desirable.

Key details:

  • Contract: Fixed-term, from January 2026 - 31st August 2026 seasonal role (following successful completion of 5 paid training days).
  • Shifts: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, or 11:45 AM – 6:00 PM.
  • Availability: Minimum of 3–4 days per week with full flexibility required. Please apply only if you can meet this commitment.
  • Uniform: Provided by the museum (Victorian dress/apron for women; waistcoat, tie, shirt, and Victorian police uniform for men).
  • Holidays: We are open daily except Christmas Day. No leave can be granted during UK school holidays
