Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Building Services Design Engineer to join our growing team. In this role, you will be responsible for the design, coordination, and delivery of mechanical building services across a wide range of construction projects. You will work closely with architects, structural engineers, project managers, and clients to develop efficient, sustainable, and compliant building services solutions.

SBS MEP are a well-established M&E Design and Build contractor providing full turnkey mechanical and electrical installation and maintenance services, we are seeking a Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer to head up the design team. With over 50 years of successful delivery across commercial, healthcare, industrial and education, the business continues to grow and now requires an experienced Design Engineer to join their team to take responsibility for the design function across the group

This is a great opportunity for a Design Engineer working at an M&E Contractor or Design Consultancy to join a company during a growth phase and make a real impact on it's continued success. 45

Key responsibilities

  • Support the preparation of technical documentation and drawing packages
  • Ensure models and drawings meet project and quality standards
  • Assist with coordination meetings and design reviews
  • Designing in conjunction with fire strategy reports, local building regulations & planning authority requirements.
  • Producing heating/cooling (thermal modelling) and ventilation load calculations using industry software
  • Sizing and selection of AHUs, FCUs, extract fans, pumps, chillers, ASHP, boilers, plate heat exchangers etc
  • Sizing and selection of domestic hot and cold-water equipment (heaters, storage tanks etc)
  • Producing pipe and duct sizing calculations using industry software or other desktop spreadsheets
  • Preparing Designers Risk Assessment and Mitigation Reports
  • Detailing mechanical layouts & schematics for build.
  • Maintain audit trail to demonstrate design review process and design acceptance by internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide engineering support to site teams, providing specialist design input to proactively resolve problems and support installation works to programme requirements.
  • Attend client meetings, post tender interviews & support the team with construction knowledge in order to win the bid
  • Attend site surveys and client meetings; provide ongoing technical support through to commissioning and handover.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong understanding of UK Building Regulations, CIBSE Guides, and industry standards
  • Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, IES, Hevacomp, or equivalent
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate technical documentation
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Strong technical understanding of HVAC systems.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • 5 years experience in a similar role

Desirable

  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or intent to achieve chartership
  • Membership of IMechE for mechanical specialisms
