Discrimination and hate offences
This policy applies to all employers and jobseekers on Indeed. Our goal is to make job searches fair, safe and welcoming. Indeed doesn't allow hate speech, discrimination or offensive content at any time while using the platform. We may remove, hide or suspend job posts or accounts that violate this policy.
Policy requirements
Age
- Jobs may not show preference or exclusion based on age
- Employers may include minimum age requirements only if required by labour laws or the nature of the job (for example, serving alcohol).
- Phrases that suggest generational preference, such as 'digital native', are not allowed.
National origin
- Jobs may not exclude or target people based on national origin, ethnicity or accent.
- Language requirements may be listed, but the wording must be neutral. For example,
- Do: 'Fluent in Spanish and English'
- Don't: 'English must be your first language'.
Race/ethnicity
- Jobs may not show preference or exclusion based on race.
- Race is not a factor in job ability, and any mention of racial preference is not allowed.
- Limited exceptions exist for acting or modelling roles.
Religion
- Jobs may not show preference or exclusion based on religion
- Religion may only be mentioned if it is directly tied to the job (for example, roles in places of worship or faith-based schools).
Gender and sexual orientation
- Jobs may not show preference or exclusion based on sex, gender identity or sexual orientation.
- Consider replacing gendered job titles with neutral terms For example,
- Do: 'chairperson' or 'server'
- Don't: 'chairman' or 'waitress'
- Limited exceptions may apply for acting, modelling, healthcare or childcare roles.
Traits that don't affect job performance
Jobs may not discriminate based on personal characteristics, such as:
- Disability
- Genetic information
- Marital or family status
- Physical appearance (tattoos, piercings, weight, hair colour)
- Socio-economic status
- Smoking habits (except in rare cases, such as childcare roles)
Identity-based insults, targeted abuse and hate speech
- We don't allow hate speech or targeted abuse in any form.
- Hate speech may include:
- Slurs
- Threats
- Content that promotes hostility towards a person or group
- Protected characteristics include, but are not limited to:
- Race
- Ethnicity
- Gender
- Religion
- Disability
- Sexual orientation
- Family status
Offensive content
- Content that is vulgar, profane or demeaning is not acceptable.
- References to mental health disorders in casual or inaccurate ways (for example, 'must be OCD') are not acceptable.
- We may remove content including swear words or sexual language.
Photo requests
- Employers may not request photos or headshots as part of the application process.
- Exceptions may apply to modelling or acting roles.
