Misleading content and activities

This policy applies to all employers who post jobs on Indeed. Our goal is to make job searches clear, accurate and trustworthy. Posts that could confuse or mislead jobseekers may be removed, hidden or require sponsorship.

Posting requirements

Post real and accurate jobs.

  • Only list open and active jobs. Remove expired or filled jobs.
  • Don't post ads, training programmes, franchise opportunities or multilevel marketing offers.
  • Give full and accurate details about pay, job duties and work type. Keep these the same wherever you post the job.
  • Don't use vague, confusing or misleading language.
  • Don't post fake jobs.
  • Don't post jobs just to build a candidate list if no real role exists.
  • Don't ask candidates to apply elsewhere or say that Indeed applications won't be considered.

Use clear and correct job titles.

  • Use one job title per role.
  • Don't post the same job under different titles.
  • Avoid clickbait titles like 'Apply now!' or 'Sign-on bonus!'
  • Don't add emojis, symbols or extra details like pay, shifts or locations.

Did you know? We have more information about job descriptions and titles in our Job posting quality standards article.

Provide the company name.

  • Use a real, verifiable company name.
  • Posts that use a confidential or generic company name may not be allowed or may require sponsorship.
  • Don't hide your identity or pretend to be another employer.

For more details, read our Generic or confidential company names article.

Post as an authorised employer.

  • Only the recruitment company or an approved recruiter can post jobs.
  • Don't post jobs for another business without their permission.
  • Job boards and aggregators must clearly show who the real employer is.

Use trademarks appropriately.

  • Only use your own brand name(s) or trademarks.
  • Don't include competitor names or suggest false partnerships.
  • Don't use well-known brand names just to attract attention.

Use the correct job location.

  • Use the appropriate job type (onsite, remote or hybrid).
  • Post jobs to the accurate, specific work location:
    • Office jobs: use the street address or postcode (you may hide the street address from public view).
    • Hybrid or remote jobs: clearly state this in the job type.
    • Nationwide roles: only if people can work from anywhere in the country.
    • Travel jobs: state how much travel is needed, whether you cover expenses and whether the role can be remote when not travelling.
  • You must sponsor jobs posted to a place outside the actual worksite location.
  • If a role is based in more than one real location, you may post to each location separately.

Quality and transparency requirements

Describe sales and marketing roles clearly.

  • Commission-only or direct sales jobs may need to:
    • Show pay type (base salary, base + commission, or commission only)
    • State whether the worker is an employee or a contractor
    • Explain the work setting (door-to-door, in-store, remote)
    • List the product or service being sold
    • Provide clear daily tasks
  • Commission-only jobs that are work-from-home or remote, or contain a misleading salary, may require sponsorship.
  • Self-employed opportunities that are commission-only will need to be sponsored. We will review jobs with misleading salaries and remove them if they do not offer the opportunity to earn a liveable income.
  • We may remove posts with unclear or misleading sales or marketing details.

Make sure job posts are fair and professional.

  • Don't use offensive, manipulative or misleading language.
  • Jobs should appear in search results based on relevance. Don't use tricks to boost visibility.
  • Jobseekers should never pay to apply.
  • Don't include discriminatory content. Base your recruitment decisions on the applicant’s ability to do the job.

Read more in our Discrimination and hate offences article.

Keep the application process direct and transparent.

  • Jobseekers should be able to apply directly through the job post link.
  • Don't redirect applicants to another website.

If you use a talent network:

  • Joining must be optional and separate from the job application.
  • Only add candidates who give clear, informed consent.
  • Only send emails about new jobs at your company.
  • Don't share jobseekers' contact details with others.
