A successful Key Realtor candidate will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications, that typically include:

  • Extensive knowledge of the economic and political forces that shape the property market

  • Extensive local knowledge of the geographic area where they work, including the quality of schools, proximity of supermarkets, local transport links and so on 
  • Ability to resolve conflicts between landlords and tenants 
  • Recognised estate agency qualifications from national organisations such as NAEA Propertymark


 Estate Agent experience requirements

Estate Agents need extensive sales experience, although entry-level Estate Agents  won’t necessarily need direct experience selling houses. However, proven experience working in retail, hospitality, call centres or other sales-based jobs demonstrates that they have the ability to adapt to the role. Entry-level candidates can also gain experience through work placements at letting companies or estate agents. Senior Estate Agents require three or more years of experience working as an Estate Agent or working for a letting company. Experience leading a small team is desirable for senior roles with management responsibilities. 


Estate Agent education and training requirements

Estate Agents need strong results in maths and English at GCSE level, to demonstrate an appropriate level of communication and arithmetic for the job. Employers can look for candidates with A-levels in business studies or economics or college diplomas in business studies or property management. A degree isn’t required, as employers often offer entry-level candidates opportunities to learn on the job and work their way up to recognised qualifications from national bodies.
