What is the difference between an Accounts Assistant and Assistant Accountant?

Accounts Assistants provide administrative support to one or more Accountants. They do not need accounting qualifications and their duties are typically more clerical than financial. What does an Accounting Assistant's typical day look like?

The daily tasks of an Accounting Assistant typically include: sorting post and directing it to the appropriate individual or department, getting invoices approved by the relevant team member, taking calls from suppliers to check payment dates or change their bank details, running sales reports, checking incoming payments against invoices, identifying and pursuing overdue payments and completing ad hoc tasks as required by their manager.

What qualities make a good Accounting Assistant?

Accounts Assistants have to be trustworthy and reliable in order to maintain professionalism required by the role. They need to be able to work well with others, take direction from their managers and use their initiative when required and manage their own workloads effectively. Diplomacy can be a very useful skill for Accounting Assistants who need to deal with concerns from customers or clients tactfully and with discretion.
