What does a Banker do?
There are different types of Banker with different areas of responsibility depending on the area in which they work. Retail Bankers work face-to-face with clients, setting up accounts and advising on banking services and products. Personal Bankers help individuals to maximise their money by recommending investments and helping with savings plans. Sales experience is a bonus as banking roles involve promoting products and services to customers.
Banker education and training requirements
Many banks offer in-house training programmes to enable entry-level banking staff to gain qualifications and internal promotion opportunities. Some banks offer apprenticeships which allow staff to train while working, gaining valuable experience alongside qualifications which can go up to degree level. Senior Bankers typically need a degree in a relevant subject such as finance and accounting, economics, business studies or maths. Certification from an organisation such as the London Institute of Banking and Finance or the Chartered Banker Institute is a bonus.
