Food and Beverage Assistants are primarily responsible for providing food and drink to guests. This can involve direct table service or it can involve topping up buffet selections with fresh food, serving guests in the buffet queue or working behind a bar mixing drinks. Their main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Setting up marquees, arranging tables and assisting with the preparation of event spaces
  • Greeting guests as they arrive at the venue, directing guests to tables, providing menus and taking orders
  • Delivering food from the kitchen to guests at the table or to a self-service area
  • Assisting Chefs by washing vegetables, assembling sandwiches, sourcing ingredients from the stock room or plating up dishes

What does a Food and Beverage Assistant do?

Food and Beverage Assistants are employed by catering companies to provide assistance with the preparation and service of food and drink at events. High-end, luxury catering companies would require more waiting experience than a catering company aimed at mid-range weddings, for instance.

Food and Beverage Assistants require GCSEs in English and maths as a minimum. This demonstrates that they have the ability to communicate and perform basic arithmetic tasks if needed. Formal education or catering training isn’t necessary if the employer offers on-the-job training to applicants. Employers can also look for applicants with an existing skill set who have taken a course in food and beverage service or courses related to hospitality.
