Interior Designer job description FAQs

What is the difference between an Interior Designer and an Architect?

The main difference between these two relate to what they design and create. An Interior Designer focuses on the inside of a space by using furniture, tiles and other materials to fit the desired look and function. An Architect focuses on the actual structure and outside and designs the facade of a building. Frequently, these two positions often work together and may have overlapping responsibilities.

Do Interior Designers have different responsibilities in different industries?

Interior Designers definitely need different skills and knowledge in different industries. An Interior Designer who has mainly worked on designing the interiors of upscale hotels will have different skills and perspectives than someone who has mainly designed educational facilities. An ideal candidate may be the one who has worked in a variety of different industries, or one who has years of specialized experience in one area depending upon the sector.

Who does an Interior Designer report to?

An Interior Designer usually works as a collaborative group along with other Designers, suppliers, Architects and the client. Depending on the company, an Interior Designer may only have to report their progress to the client. Or there may be a Project Manager who the Designer must report to and ask for approval before making purchases or decisions. A candidate should be comfortable and prepared to work in either environment.

How can you make your Interior Designer job description stand out?

Its best to explain what industry the company works in to give the job candidate a clearer picture of their expectations. A company that focuses on luxury spaces is looking for different qualities than one that mainly designs functional office spaces. Focus on what makes the company unique. Also, highlight areas like room for growth within the company as well as benefits that may not be offered at other design companies.
