Merchandiser job description FAQs

What are the different types of Merchandisers?

Generally, there are five types of Merchandisers: Retail Merchandisers,  Visual Merchandisers,  Product Merchandisers,  Digital Merchandisers and  Omnichannel Merchandisers. A Digital Merchandiser is much like a Retail Merchandiser; but the Digital Merchandiser works solely on online stores and websites. The Retail Merchandiser, however only works in a physical store. Product Merchandisers focus on promoting a specific product and may work across different retail outlets. Omnichannel Merchandisers work across all (physical and digital) platforms to create a user-friendly buying experience for the customer.

What is the difference between a Merchandiser and a Buyer?

A Buyer is mainly responsible for what a store buys and stocks. In some cases, they make this decision in collaboration with a Merchandiser. A Merchandiser is primarily responsible for how the stocked items are priced and displayed.

Who does a Merchandiser report to?

Depending on the industry, a Merchandiser will report to the Head of Merchandising, Merchandising Director, Merchandise Manager or a Senior Merchandiser.
