Order Pickers are primarily responsible for ensuring that the orders they pick and pack include the correct items and are undamaged when shipped. Order Pickers are responsible for hitting their daily pick and pack targets along with performing their work in a healthy and safety compliant manner. Their key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Using scanners, barcodes and serial numbers to locate the correct items for shipment and to ensure that inventory is managed accurately
  • Safely picking items from shelves, using forklifts or machinery where necessary
  • Packaging completed orders in protective bubble wrap and cardboard boxes to protect them during shipment
  • Completing necessary invoicing or paperwork to allow efficient tracking of orders

Employers can also consider applicants with experience working in logistics, such as Delivery Drivers or Lorry Drivers. 

Order Picker education and training requirements

Order Pickers don’t require a formal education. However, employers will look for candidates with good GCSE results in maths and English to ensure they have the ability to communicate well. Employers usually provide on-the-job training, but some may prefer candidates with existing training, particularly if they need them to be trained in operating heavy machinery or forklifts. Entry-level candidates often gain experience through warehouse apprenticeships.
