What does a Pharmacy Technician do?

Pharmacy Technicians prepare, dispense and supply patients and health professionals with over-the-counter and prescription medications. They also handle inventory and customer transactions at the pharmacy, under the supervision of the Pharmacist. Pharmacy Technicians also make sure that all the  equipment in the pharmacy, including scales, computers and printers is running efficiently. Pharmacy Technicians must have several years of experience working in a pharmacy. Ideal candidates may have worked as Pharmacy Assistants, Dispensing Technicians or Dispensing Assistants. Some employers accept candidates who obtained clinical experience during on-the-job training. Employers may also hire candidates who have gained experience through internships and externships after completing an accredited Pharmacy Technician program. Some employers require Pharmacy Technicians to have worked in a customer service, or sales role as this equips them with the knowledge and ability to work with diverse clients enhancing their customer relationship management skills. 

 

Pharmacy Technician education and training requirements

Pharmacy Technicians don’t need a degree to perform their job, but must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Applicants with a National Certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences, a National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)/Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) or a Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) National Diploma can also apply but must have the GPhC registration. 

Candidates should have at least four General Certificates in Secondary Education (GCSEs), including maths, English and two science or equivalent qualifications, to  show that they have an in-depth understanding of pharmacy.
