Instrument Repair Technician

Location: PO12 2DL, Institute of Naval Medicine located Alverstoke (near Lee-On-Solent, Gosport) with free onsite parking.

Package: £24,160 to £34,400 (dependent on suitability and level of experience)

AWE is looking for an Instrument Repair Technician to join our dynamic team. As part of AWE's Nucleonic Instrumentation Service (NIS) Team, you'll play a pivotal role in the repair section, a core function that underpins the delivery of the capability. You will enjoy a flexible and wide-ranging role that will include core tasks of equipment diagnostics, management and procurement of spares, repair operations and other opportunities to support the team.

The NIS capability provides through-life support for the MOD's suite of RDME. This is delivered via 3 core functions: Logistics, Calibration & Repair, operating three dose-rate calibration rooms, a contamination calibration lab and a dynamic test facility, processing approximately 8,000 instruments through the facility every year. The facility is UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 accredited. The team also provides expert technical advice and evaluation, supports high profile projects and responds to high priority demands to meet the needs of defence and industry.

Who are we looking for?

We do need you to have the following:

  • NVQ/BTEC or equivalent in an electrical / electronic engineering discipline.
  • Ability to fault‑find down to component level using schematics, test equipment, and local work instructions.
  • Confident with carrying out soldering, rework and safe handling of delicate components.
  • Skilled with the use if test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and other diagnostic tools.
  • Articulate and capable of producing accurate, clean and reliable repairs with strong adherence to work instructions and documentation to ensure quality control.
  • Possess a problem-solving mindset, able to work independently, think logically and resolve complex technical issues efficiently.
  • Understanding the use of hand tools and methods of work within an electro-mechanical environment.
  • Confident to carry out basic part identification and procurement.
  • Be willing to undertake training/repair work (both nationally and overseas when required) and carry out occasional work on board naval platforms in support of critical work.
  • Full UK Driving licence - Cat B / no more than 6 points

While this isn't a checklist, we'd love to hear from you if you have experience in any of the following areas:

  • Experience or knowledge of working in the defence sector or with radiation protection equipment.
  • Working in high volume 'quality controlled' regulated repair environment, delivering to specified targets and priorities.
  • Working with and managing COSHH‑regulated products safely and correctly.
  • Working as an integral and effective member of a small team, with the ability to flex and support others when required.
  • Customer focused delivery, requiring the ability to clearly explain repair findings or technical issues when required.
  • Be willing to undertake possible ship trials national and overseas training.

You'll need to have the ability to work calmly and constructively in a priority changing environment and be able to manage your own workload. You will also have initiative, enthusiasm, a flexible approach, and ability to work to tight deadlines.

Due to the classified nature of the work involved, there are limited opportunities to work from home in this role. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working on site at AWE Alverstoke.
