The Big Solar Co-op and Transition Stroud are looking for a Big Solar Co-op local coordinator (Stroud) to join the Big Solar Co-op team. You will be employed by Sharenergy Co-operative Limited ('Sharenergy').

As the local coordinator, you will work with Big Solar Co-op and Transition Stroud to find new sites for solar PV on a wide range of public and commercial buildings across Stroud District. The early sustained focus for the project will be on the areas of the four town/parish councils that are funding the project.

You will be the first point of contact and responsible for liaison with stakeholders across the project areas, to push forward the delivery of an ambitious target of 400kW of detailed proposals for new rooftop solar in Stroud District a year after inception in 2023.

The project will be supported by a Local Advisory Panel (LAP), which will input local knowledge, review progress and forward planning, and identify learning. Transition Stroud will convene the LAP which will meet quarterly.

Your responsibilities will include the following and the mix and focus will vary as the project progresses:

  • Identification of new potential rooftop solar sites in

(a) the areas of the four town/parish councils funding the project and(b) across the wider district of Stroud

  • Development of a strategy for focusing on and engaging priority sites
  • Recruitment of new long-term local volunteers able to contribute meaningfully to technical assessment and site engagement
  • Promotion of the local project through targeted marketing and publicity activities
  • Encouraging and assisting potential solar site managers/owners to use the site self-referral process
  • Ensuring the design of solar arrays using OpenSolar software (training will be provided)
  • Developing outline proposals specific to priority sites
  • Making initial approaches to priority sites and following up to secure agreements.
  • Reporting strategy, progress and forward plans to the Local Advisory Panel

Person Specification


  • Confident communicator and able to initiate conversations with various stakeholders, work as part of a team, and develop collaborations and partnerships.
  • Experience in an organisational, social business or commercial environment giving you a good command of business, financial and project management fundamentals.
  • Be motivated to find practical solutions to the climate crisis, and understand and support the aims of the community energy movement.
  • A good understanding of solar energy technologies.
  • Able to set up and run events and online meetings.
  • IT literate with an excellent understanding of Microsoft Office plus online tools such as Dropbox and Google Suite.
  • A commitment to diversity and anti-discriminatory practice.


  • Experience of recruitment, training and coordination of volunteers
  • Knowledgeable about delivery of project marketing and communications, including social media.

Contract offer

Employment: Part-time, 1 year fixed term contract.
Salary: £24k (pro rata) - 3 days/week
Holidays: 25 days plus statutory holidays (pro rata)

Location: The role is based in Stroud District but we are happy to accept applications from candidates who live within reasonable proximity. We expect that the successful candidate will mostly work from home. Sharenergy will cover the cost of a laptop and mobile with a contract for work purposes.

Travel for site visits and meetings is a crucial aspect of the role and the successful candidate may expect to regularly visit the areas of the four funding parishes and, as the project progresses, the wider district.

Flexible working: The role can be delivered flexibly within (nominally) normal office hours. However, some evening and weekend meetings are likely to be necessary. Applicants need to be flexible and willing to work around the needs of the projects.

Travel: All travel expenses incurred for the purposes of this work will be reimbursed by Sharenergy. Mileage can be paid when needed but, wherever reasonably possible, employees are encouraged to use active travel or public transport.

Timeline: The deadline for applications is 17 May 2022 and selected candidates will be asked to attend a one hour Zoom interview on 25 May 2022. The role is then available for an immediate start.
