General Description

As an Electrical Design Engineer you will be expected to work in a design office environment, whilst providing working design solutions to technical problems. This role will often require you to work on your own initiative, sometimes under pressure producing detailed design drawings suitable for construction in a timely manner.

The position will also encompass team working on larger projects, including checking the work of other members of staff to mitigate any potential discrepancies between each other’s work scopes/interfaces

The organisation intends to recruit trainee and/or lesser qualified members of staff and from time to time you may be required to provide assistance to their continued learning and development.

Basic Function

To carry out duties and activities allotted under the job title and contract of employment including general aspects associated with the office environment and Health & Safety.

Reporting to the Controls Manager and other company personnel and their allotted departments.

Main Duties

  • Undertake to follow the policies and procedures designed to improve the working practices of the Design and Technical Departments.
  • Undertake site visits and site surveys.
  • Actively take part in a close working relationship with all other areas of the Company.
  • Design and detailing using Autocad or Eplan of both bespoke and standard equipment/systems and ensuring quality standards/procedures are met.
  • Utilise company standards (designs, drawings or BOM’s etc.) to prevent continual design/drawing work being carried out that is unnecessary.
  • Ensure that any modifications found necessary during manufacture are captured, reviewed and where agreed the relevant drawings are updated for future use.
  • Control panel layout and design from one off machines to multi panel build and installations, this may entail working to a customer provided specification (URS) or the appropriate European Legislation.
  • Cable and switchgear component sizing to suit motor and pump specification from Sales, Project and Design Departments.
  • PLC/HMI selection in conjunction with the software engineering department.
  • Specification and sourcing of components, consumable and other hardware in conjunction with Sales, Purchasing and Software Departments to meet requirements and project cost targets.
  • Support Spares/Service Department with sourcing of parts for customers.
  • Providing a Safety Report with calculations for the Technical File.
  • Maintain a knowledge of the latest developments from technology platforms such as Mitsubishi, Allen Bradley, Siemens, etc.
  • Be willing to work to UL508 panel/circuit design and AS/NZ current regulations for markets such as Australia.
  • Have an understanding of applicable European Legislation especially EN ISO 13849-1/2' the safety related parts of the control system', 18th Edition, PUWER regulations, & Machinery directive/CE/CA marking.
  • Work closely with all Departments on each project to meet target costs and lead times.
  • Testing of Control Panels/Systems as required.

General Objectives and Responsibilities

  • To make sure that the task under your control is correct and free from errors.
  • Do not proceed with a design or verbal instruction knowing it to be incorrect.
  • To be polite and understanding to colleagues and customers at all times.
  • To consider value engineering when purchasing parts and costing jobs with the aim of reducing times and prices, where possible.
  • To read and understand the Company Safety Manual and comply with Company Safety Policy both in house and on site.
  • To help create a hygienic, clean and uncluttered working environment.
  • To help create a team atmosphere that is both flexible and cooperative that will embrace change and challenges in a positive and helpful manner.
  • Have an awareness and develop a working knowledge of 3D Modelling.

Salary Range dependant on experience £39k - £44K

37 hours per week

Paid overtime

Core hours: Monday – Thursday 8.30am -5.00pm, Friday 8.30am – 2.00pm

(flexible upon prior agreement)
