Full job description

We are looking for an experienced Practice Bookkeeper to join our fast-growing, dynamic accountancy firm in South Liverpool.

This is a varied role working with a portfolio of small business clients. Around 75% of the role will involve bookkeeping, VAT returns and management accounts support. The remaining 25% will involve assisting our payroll team with client payroll work. (Payroll experience is not essential - we will provide training as appropriate.)

We provide a number of benefits to our team, including hybrid working and the option of a 4-day week, giving you a 3-day weekend.

You will report to Beth, our Bookkeeping Lead, and will be part of our growing bookkeeping team. You will also support Suzanne, our Payroll Lead, with payroll work for our clients.

In many cases, you will be the first point of contact for our bookkeeping clients. You will liaise with them to gather financial information, keep their records up to date, prepare VAT returns, and help produce useful financial information for them and for our internal accounts team.

This role would suit someone who has worked in an accountancy practice, is comfortable managing bookkeeping for several clients at once, and can come in and make a positive contribution from day one.

We will provide training on our systems, processes and the JDA way of working, but you will already have strong bookkeeping experience and be confident working with clients.

We will also provide training on Payroll as appropriate.

  • Liaising with clients to gather information and records to allow you and the rest of our team to prepare accounts, VAT returns, and tax returns
  • Raising sales invoices
  • Inputting and analysing purchase invoices
  • Reconciling bank and credit card transactions
  • Reconciling sales and purchase ledgers
  • Reconciling other Balance Sheet accounts to ensure accuracy
  • Assisting the payroll team with client payroll work
  • Helping process weekly, fortnightly and monthly payrolls
  • Liaising with clients to obtain payroll information
  • Supporting with payroll queries, pension submissions and payroll deadlines

Most of our bookkeeping is prepared using Xero or Quickbooks, with DEXT used for purchase invoice processing.

Essential skills

  • At least 3 years’ bookkeeping experience, preferably within an accountancy practice
  • Experience managing bookkeeping for more than one client or business
  • Good knowledge of VAT and bookkeeping processesApproachable and likeable – your colleagues and clients never have a bad word to say about you
  • Able to communicate with colleagues and clients
  • Attention to detail, accuracy and ability to follow procedures and policies
  • Excellent time-management skills and commitment to meet deadlines
  • A “can do” attitude and desire to provide an excellent service to the team and to our clients
  • A willingness to learn new skills and apply them
  • Good knowledge and experience of using of Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel, Outlook and Word. Training will be provided on other software packages as required
