Company description

Cycle Path Services Ltd is a sustainable transport consultancy specialising in active travel projects throughout Scotland.

Job description

Summary

A motivated and well-organised experienced engineer is required to support a number of Design Stage cycle path projects situated throughout Scotland. You don’t need to know about cycling though it would be helpful, but you do need to be a Chartered Engineer with design experience.

Background

We work with established clients and have a suite of existing projects which are in various design stages. Much preliminary route assessment has already been carried out, and now we require engineering designs to be created.

We are small organisation that requires all members of the team to be resourceful and solve problems without requiring large amounts of support. The role will however provide a great opportunity for innovative design on routes typically between rural settlements.

Main tasks & responsibilities

  • Create and assess route design options, building on existing work and GIS data on route assessment.
  • Collaborate with field survey work
  • Work with other members of the team including other consultants such as geotechnical engineer
  • Liaise with external organisations such as SEPA, utilities and the local authority regarding design
  • Create concept stage and developed stage designs, working to established design standards. These will be primarily on shared use paths, but will also include other active travel infrastructure such as cycle parking, signage, and in some cases project-related street furniture and placemaking.
  • Produce designs on CAD, and output general arrangement drawings
  • Contribute to the designer’s risk register and pre-construction file.
  • Be conversant with the requirements of CDM 2015, and design accordingly (though you will not be expected to take the role of Principal Designer).
  • Cost and schedule the proposed works.
  • Create a preliminary construction phase plan
  • Liaison with clients & funders, including representing our team at meetings
  • Support the team in other aspects of the project

Skills and Experience Required

  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering ( or equivalent )
  • Chartered Engineer (or close to achieving this status)
  • Ability to design substantial sealed surface cycle paths in various site situations including green field and adjacent to highway
  • Experience of designing elements such as reinforced earth structures & drainage features
  • Interpret geotechnical reports & information and design accordingly.
  • Experience using CAD software, and ability to produce design output using CAD
  • Good IT skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work systematically and maintain good records
  • Ability to produce work at a professional rate and of good quality
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the Principal Consultant

Contract

The work will be provided via a ‘Contract for Services’. It is not an employment contract. A fixed fee will be paid on the basis of 72 days work at £250 per day (including all costs and VAT if applicable). The headline salary of up to £57500 equates to the pro rata day rate and is indicative. The role is required from early Feb to 30th May 2021 (with possibility of extension if additional work secured) .

Application

To apply, please send your CV (max 2 pages) together with a covering letter that tells us how you meet the requirements above, and also specifically addresses the following:

  • Relevant experience including examples of projects that you have worked on and your role
  • Examples of design output
  • Two referees
