Full job description

About Red Whale

Red Whale is a leading UK medical education provider, serving thousands of primary care professionals every year. A remote first and flexible organisation since our inception, we continue to hold true to our values to inspire, empower and care through trustworthy, top quality medical education so that primary care colleagues can deliver their best care possible.

We are shamelessly proud of never ever EVER taking pharmaceutical company sponsorship of any kind, not even a biscuit, a pen, or a sticky note!

Originally a face-to-face course provider, we have now transformed into a digital powerhouse, creating educational content that rivals TV productions, on a super sleek digital platform. Acquired by the Medical Defence Union (MDU) in 2023, we are now on an exciting journey to broaden our impact beyond the primary care market.

The Role

We are looking for a creative, organised and motivated candidate to join our expanding digital production team. The role will involve assisting our digital team with filming educational content in our studio, editing video content, producing live online events and making sure our on-demand content is kept up to date. The role will also involve liaising with clinicians and other digital team members to plan for filming days and live online events. There is often a quick turnaround from video production to getting content live on our platform, so time management, working to deadlines, high attention to detail and good communication are all key skills for this role. The candidate will be required to attend and schedule meetings remotely as well as attend face-to-face meetings when required (often in Reading).

The skills we’re looking for

Video editing - familiar with Adobe Creative Suite and Premiere Pro and able to:

  • cut and arrange videos with multiple camera feeds
  • use chroma settings to create the green screen effect
  • use simple transitions on occasion to help fade cuts, but have an eye for what is suitable and not
  • colour correct
  • create short animation videos.

Basic knowledge on cameras - what frame rates and resolutions are, how to operate a camera and how they output

Lighting – knows how to function lights and adjust lighting to create/remove shadows and highlights

Mixing desk – audio – knows how lapel and boom mics work, how to set up a microphone through the mixing desk and how to equalise sound

Mixing desk – visual – can vision mix live with multiple camera and graphic feeds, knows how to operate VMix or other virtual production software and when it’s suitable to cut between camera feeds

Computing ability - confident with M365 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook).

Animation skills – can create short animation videos.

Qualifications

Preferably hold a degree in a creative arts subject, but not essential if you have a hands-on experience and a strong portfolio of previous work.

Personal Attributes

· Adaptable - can quickly learn new software and systems

· Quick thinking – can adjust to situations quickly and try to resolve in a calm and suitable manner.

· Flexible – in the face of changing requirements

· Able to meet tight deadlines on multiple projects

· Good communicational skills

· Can work collaboratively within a team across different departments as well as work well independently and use their initiative

· Strong work ethic and happy to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in.

What you will be doing

· Assist the digital team with course filming as well as the planning and production of live online events at our Reading studio, and occasionally at our London satellite studio.

· Frequently act as the producer for live events to ensure the live stream is running smoothly by monitoring the output from the studio, and answering non-clinical questions from our audience amongst other tasks.

· Edit footage to create engaging content, and manage this content and ensure it stays up to date.

· Liaise with clinicians to plan the filming of content and live online events, and add creative input where needed.

· Managing our catalogue of content on Vimeo alongside our digital team.

· Attend weekly digital team meetings and company monthly team meetings.

What we offer

· Benefits: salary between £26,000 and £27,500 with pension, income protection, enhanced sickness pay and death in service insurance.

· Flexible working: We are based at the University Campus Reading, but you will only be required in the office when there is course filming as editing and other aspects of the role can be done at home. You may be required to work from our parent company’s London office occasionally.

· Collaborative culture: We’re a positive, can-do team where it’s safe to make mistakes and learn from them. We’re all in it together to make a difference in healthcare.

Here’s how to apply

We are open to new applications until Friday 30th May. During this period, we will engage with candidates for pre-screening and shortlisting. Please send links to your portfolio of work and show reels with your application.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and we reserve the right to close the application window earlier than the deadline if the number of applications exceeds expectations.

· If you are shortlisted, we will send you an editing task via email.

· If you are successful with the editing task, we will arrange a first interview via Teams.

· If you are successful in the first interview, we will invite you to come into our Reading studio for the final interview which will include a brief hands-on production task to test your knowledge.

We are flexible, but ideally, we’d like the successful applicant to start by the end of July 2025.

At Red Whale, we actively encourage applicants from ALL backgrounds. This includes those from underrepresented backgrounds, people from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds, those with disabilities and those from the LGBTQ+ community. We want to bring a unique blend of experiences, backgrounds, perspectives and knowledge as we recognise that diversity makes us stronger. As is good practice, we will operate a completely blinded short listing process.
