About us
North Air provide manpower to operate and maintain Gatwick Airport Storage and Hydrant Company (GASHCo) which is a joint venture company, operated by Air bp to JIG standards and Air bp Regulations. GASHCo is an Upper Tier COMAH facility which supplies all the Jet A1 Aviation Fuel requirements to London Gatwick Airport.
GASHCo’s maintenance team is a key aspect of the day-to-day operation of the site; ensuring KPI’s are delivered, with routine maintenance and fault rectifications carried out to the highest standards. They promote compliance to Operator standards and actively participate in continuous site improvement.
About the Role:
This role is currently working on Monday - Friday day shift with occasional night working required
The Mechanical Fitter is a key role in the effective delivery of the maintenance strategy, with significant emphasis on safety, competence, and workmanship in order to carry out PPM’s and repairs of operational plant effectively. A key part of this is to develop and maintain good relationships with management, staff, airport stakeholders, and contractors so that the operational plant and hydrant system is maintained effectively, safely, and efficiently. As well as this, it is essential to maintain a high level of professional development.

The post holder’s key responsibilities will include:
- Ensuring that established preventative maintenance programmes and unplanned works are carried out on Fuel Farm and airfield hydrant systems in accordance with Air BP Regulations and JIG/Operational Standards.
- To maintain and repair company equipment and plant to required operational standards.
- Oversee all control of work processes within area of expertise, including hazard risk assessment and permit to work.
- Management of contractors.
- To ensure that the work area is suitably maintained to provide a safe and suitable environment for maintenance.
- To raise ideas that will provide development of procedures or design which will improve safety, efficiency or serviceability or operational equipment.
- Be responsible for maintaining a satisfactory level of personal training with regard to task breakdowns and technical upgrades.
- Ensure that suitable levels of spare parts are maintained whilst keeping within agreed budgets.
- Raise purchase orders for spares and service in a timely manner to allow maximum efficiency of equipment.
- Actively participate in the GASHCo near miss reporting process.

Education / Certifications:
- Minimum of NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering discipline (or approved equivalent).
- Full Driving licence
- This position requires an airside pass, so will be required to complete a basic criminal records disclosure and have a 5-year employment record, which meets with the British Airport Authority Regulations.
Skills and Experience (Essential)
- Must have completed an apprenticeship in a mechanical/maintenance discipline or undergone equivalent method of training and have at least 5 years of practical experience post apprenticeship.
- Knowledge and experience of Control of Work including risk assessments and hazard identification.
- The ability to work safely whilst meeting deadlines and objectives.
- Experience of Health & Safety requirements/procedures.
- Strong Interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to solve problems and think logically
Skills and Experience (Desirable)
- Knowledge of working with aviation or fuel storage equipment and hydrant systems.
- Knowledge of Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (e.g. HolisTech) preferred but not essential.
- Experience maintaining aviation fuelling vehicles or similar.
- Familiarisation with DSEAR Regulations, Hazardous Area Classification/Zoning would be very advantageous.
- Experience of managing Permit to Work systems, or Safe Systems of Work.
- Experience of pumps/motors, tanks, pipework would be advantageous.
Qualifications (Desirable)
- COMPEX Trained (EX-11) – Mechanical.
- MJI10 & MJI19 – Mechanical Joint Integrity.
- SBT-01. – Small Bore Tubing
