Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for two Female Youth Workers to join our Youth Team at Apna Ghar Minority Ethnic Women’s Centre on Ocean Road, South Shields Funded by Community Foundation North East. The Youth Workers will be responsible for delivering a programme of youth work within a range of centre-based and community settings through the provision of youth led projects and informal educational activities to meet the needs of young girls aged 11 to 18 years.
The successful candidates will have an NVQ or equivalent in youth and community work, experience of developing, promoting organising and delivering personal, social and educational programmes and opportunities with and for young people. In addition, candidates will have the ability to communicate with a wide range of people, develop effective working relationships, work as part of a team and have a willingness to work flexibly to ensure service delivery.
Duties
- Duties will include organising and running community programmes, helping the youth understand values and ideas and building their confidence and life skills. To work with the youth to facilitate their social, personal, and physical development through informal education and play.
- Learning about the area in which the project takes place, and the needs of young residents.
- setting up and running projects and programmes of activities for young people
- providing opportunities for young people to talk openly and confidentially.
- developing and implementing ways to involve young people in projects – for example, by providing feedback or being involved in decision.
- directing young people to sources of advice
- identifying concerns about young people involved in programmes and following these up.
- managing budgets
- maintaining confidential records
- writing and presenting reports
- facilitating workshops in community settings
· You may need to work outside traditional ‘office’ hours – for example, if youth groups meeting in the evening or if projects run at weekends.
Qualifications
- Experience working with children or adolescents in a mentoring or supportive role
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with youth from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- A genuine passion for youth work and a commitment to fostering positive relationships.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while also being self-motivated.
- Relevant qualifications in youth work or related fields would be advantageous.
The role is offered on a fixed term basis till April 30th, 2026, working 5 hours per week, working evenings and occasional weekends.
