Job description
Reporting to the Head of Centres of Excellence, this role will lead DVLAs sustainability, environmental and compliance agenda, shaping how the organisation responds to the climate challenge and delivers lasting environmental impact.
You will drive the development and delivery of the Sustainability Management Plan, working across DVLA and with Government partners to embed sustainable thinking into everyday decision-making. Building strong relationships and influencing at all levels, you will champion innovation, challenge existing approaches and turn strategy into practical, measurable outcomes.
Continuous improvement will be central to this role, requiring you to anticipate internal and external change and translate it into a sustainable, future-focused strategy for the organisation.
Your responsibilities will include, but arent limited to:
- Development of an overarching action plan and programme to deliver the strategic objectives and outcomes including meeting the Greening Government Commitments and developing and delivering a Net Zero programme.
- Developing, managing and maintaining an overall Sustainability action plan to deliver the strategy and ensure appropriate policies, standards and targets are in place and communicated across the organisation and suppliers.
- Working across the organisation to ensure that Sustainability objectives are fully integrated into the delivery models of each Directorate.
- Advising the DVLA Executive Team and DfT on all aspects of sustainability ensuring an appropriate level of understanding of the compliance requirements, risks, and activities to deliver the DVLA Sustainability Objectives.
- Maintaining and developing the ISO14001 Environmental Management accreditation which the Agency currently holds.
- Accountable for the overall data, MI and reporting related to Sustainability, driving continuous improvement.

Person specification
Essential qualifications:
Holds appropriate accreditation for responsibilities aligned to this core role e.g. MISEP for core sustainability operations roles, MCIEEM for Ecologists, MEI for Energy Managers, CIWM or CIWEM for waste managers, MIES for environmental sciences, Chartered Forester for Foresters.
You will be required to provide evidence that you hold any essential qualifications at some point during the recruitment process. If you cannot provide evidence, your application will be withdrawn.
Required experience:
To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:
- Demonstrable leadership experience where you have successfully managed and motivated a team.
- Experience of where you have worked within a professional sustainability environment.
- Experience of where you have driven change and implemented continuous improvement strategies.
- Experience of where you have demonstrated effective communication skills and have built relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
- Evidence of your knowledge of current legislation relating to sustainability and ISO14001.
Additional Information
We welcome applications from candidates who can speak Welsh and English. Welsh language skills would be useful in this role, but it is not an assessment criterion so it wont put you at any disadvantage during recruitment if you arent a Welsh speaker. Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements
Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week.
Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 35 hours per week.
This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements.
The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (one of the locations cited in the advert) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location/visiting stakeholders. Your designated workplace will be your contractual place of work. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.
You may be required to travel at times to other sites to attend team meetings, but this will be on an infrequent basis.
