Full job description
Are you someone with a keen eye for detail and a can-do attitude? Would you enjoy working as part of a team to deliver a quality service to the residents of the Canterbury District?
In this job, you'll genuinley get to make a difference across the Canterbury District. When you tackle illegal parking, you're not just handing out fines - you're helping keep our roads and footpaths safe and easy to use for everyone who lives, works or pops by for a visit.
Plus, you'll be right there with the team, looking after our car parks and making sure they're welcoming and well-kept for the thousands of people who come to Canterbury every year. It's a real chance to play your part in keeping the district running smoothly and looking its best.
What’s in it for you?
- A starting salary of £30,105 (Subject to evaluation)
- A cost of living pay award negotiated annually as a salary increase.
- We’ll support and encourage your career by providing excellent opportunities for training and development.
- Generous annual leave entitlement, starting at 23 days PLUS 3 additional days over the Christmas period whilst the Council offices are closed. There is also the option to buy additional annual leave.
- A fantastic local government pension scheme.
- Employee perks, including multiple retailer and lifestyle discounts to tackle the cost of living and help you enjoy your free time.
- Free use of Canterbury’s Park and Ride for an easier commute.
About this Parking and Transport Officer job in Canterbury:
In this role as a Parking and Transport Officer, you’ll get stuck into a variety of tasks. Not only will you be out and about enforcing the rules and educating people to help reduce illegal parking across the district, but you’ll also be responding to concerns from the community and regularly checking our car parks to make sure they’re always up to scratch for residents. It’s all about keeping things running smoothly and making a real difference for everyone in the area.
Here’s what you’ll get up to:
- You will carry out patrols to identify illegal parking and enforce parking regulations by issuing Penalty Charge Notices
- You will cover large distances on foot
- You’ll be out and about as the face of the council, chatting with local residents, answering their questions in person, and keeping in touch through our dedicated comms system to make sure everyone feels supported and informed.
- You’ll be there to help people using our car parks by carrying out regular checks and letting us know if you spot any necessary repairs or equipment that’s not working as it should.
- You’ll carry out basic maintenance tasks on equipment to make sure that those using our car parks run smoothly.
Working pattern:
- 37 hours per week, averaged over a 3-week shift pattern.
- This is achieved with 9-hour day shifts, which will include some weekends. Rest days will be scheduled during the week on weeks that you are rostered to work on the weekend. The early shift is 07:45 to 16:45. The evening shift begins at 11:45 to 20:45. There are also opportunities to carry out ad hoc very early shifts or later evening shifts, on a voluntary basis, to maximise enforcement cover during busy seasonal periods.
About you, the ideal Parking and Transport Officer for the job:
Full training around the technical aspects of the role will be given, supporting the right candidates to learn and develop in the role.
Here’s what you’ll need to be successful in the job:
Your knowledge
- An awareness of parking restrictions is highly desirable along with knowledge of key legislation (Traffic Management Act)
Your skills
- Able to communicate tactfully and effectively with the public and deal with difficult or confrontational situations
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team as well as on own
- Ability to maintain a high level of attention to detail
Your experience
- Experience of working with members of the public
- Experience of using ICT in a work-based situation or setting to capture, record and monitor actions
Due to the nature of this role, the successful applicant will be required to undertake a standard DBS check as part of their pre-employment clearances.
