Full job description
About us:
Jenkins Marine are a family owned and run group of companies, established over 35 years. From our base in Poole, we operate a fleet of specialised commercial workboats and barges throughout northern Europe; serving dredging, marine construction, transportation, energy, research and salvage market sectors.
About this role:
Hours: Full Time shift work (4 weeks on, 4 weeks off)
Working onboard a UK registered multicat type workboat / tug, operating mainly around the UK and EU coast.
We are looking for a reliable and conscientious individual, with a friendly and professional manner, to serve as a Marine Engineer alongside our experienced Vessel crews onboard our workboats.
Ultimately, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the vessels machinery and deck equipment, carrying out engineering responsibilities on board. Also including deck work with deck crane and towing winches, slinging/unslinging, mooring lines and navigational watches.
As part of a small crew, you will be required to keep the vessel clean, tidy and in good operational condition cosmetically and mechanically, conducting general engineering duties e.g. oil changes, daily checks, and general vessel maintenance.
You will ensure that your assigned vessel and all related equipment is maintained in a clean, safe and reliable condition, ready for operation at a moment’s notice.
When working on board a vessel, you will work as vessel deck crew/Marine Engineer, depending on the needs of the project and your experience, working on a rota basis of 4 weeks on/4 weeks off. You will be required to work on deck and assist with navigational watch keeping as part of your duties.
About you:
You will enjoy working on board a vessel at sea and are looking to develop your seamanship, deck, crane operation, watchkeeping and engineering skills and experience on workboats.
You will be a great team worker, able to anticipate the needs of your colleagues when on board and an excellent communicator; co-ordinating important and complex information to relevant individuals.
However, you will also need to be self-motivated and pro-active in your approach to tasks, able to work independently when needed. The position requires an individual who is able to think on their feet whilst always keeping the contract delivery and health and safety requirements at the forefront of their mind. You will also need to be comfortable and able to work away from home for periods of time.
Qualifications & Accreditations Required
Essential
- Previous experience working onboard tugs/workboats or fishing vessels.
- Experience working with deck cranes and deck winches.
- Hold an MCA recognised Marine Engineering qualification – minimum AEC1 + AEC2, or higher CoC
- Hold current valid STCW basic safety training courses, completed within last 5 years.
- Valid ENG1 seafarers Medical certificate with no restrictions.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Fluent in spoken English.
- Ability to cook own meals (and take turns cooking for other crew)

- Small vessel navigation / watchkeeping qualification e.g. RYA Day skipper, RYA Yachtmaster or Navigational watch rating certificate.
- Knuckleboom crane operator certificate
- Slinger/signaller certificate
- UK resident preferred, south coast as HQ is based in Poole, Dorset.
- Schengen/EU VISA/Passport.
To apply, please send us your CV, salary expectations and a cover letter, outlining why you believe you would be suitable for this role, highlighting the relevant skills and experience you would employ to make a positive impact.
